WRT54G version5

Hello to all!!!
I hope i'm ok to post here if not please feel free to move in proper forum.I installed a linksys router WRT54G V5 on my brother's computer acer laptop (by telephone we live 500miles apart and he's a first time computer owner;so very green but doing the best he can...lol) I've set everything up by remote assistance through windows xp and have installed skype 2.0.0.97
to be able to communicate through web cam and/or just mic.All works excellent until we connect the router.I'm up to where i can connect through both remote and skype but after a few minutes it cuts out.Skype shuts down and remote assistance disconnects. After various phone calls to microsoft and to linksys i still have the same problem.I figure i have to open a port but which one.(windows firewall disactivated)I don't mind leaving remote assistance like that since i won't connect very often and this shows me the router is doing its job but i do want the skype to work properly in order to communicate.I use this with all my other contacts and its the best program for that.Like i said i just disconnect router and all is excellent. Is there a way to configure it and if yes how do i do it.Like i said i'm 500 miles away and am doing this by phone or through remote assistance when the router is out of the picture.Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

v5 WRT54G's suck...

Linksys took a GREAT product and killed it when they came out with the v5 WRT54G.

Most people who have bought the v5 units are unhappy with them.

The best thing you can do is take it back to the store, get your $$ back, and go to Walmart and look for a V4 unit.

If you look around a bit here, there are ways of identifying the different versions of the router. All are good except v5.

Good luck.

Ok, before you go returning things...

Unless you plan on installing third party firmware, the v5 should be ok for you.

As far as skype goes, you'll probably have to forward the port that it uses to the comp that you plan on using it on.

Hi there,
Here are a list of the ports used by your applications. I set them under port triggering because they can be used regardless of the client PC's IP address. You can also set them in port forwarding if you have problems with triggering but keep in mind that the PC that will use them must have a fixed IP.

EDIT: True that the newer V5 could be buggy but first try the port triggering/forwarding and see if it helps. Other choices would be WRT54GL or WRT54G pre version5.

Make sure also you get the latest update for the WRT54G v5 firmware, download the tool that they have on »www.linksys.com/connect that is called NETupdate. It will automatically update your router for you, just follow it carefully.

3rd party firmware was the least of my issues with the version 5. it was just unstable.

I've already taken the update for it since then i can get connected but like i said it keeps cutting out. Before the update i couldn't even connect.Next step i'll try what peter_m
said but that's where i'm a little confused. How do i enter his configurations to be able to configure those ports in port triggering/forwarding ?.Do i insert cd in or do i type router's ip adress in web browser? or is there another way to get in?Like i mentionned before please be specific since i don't have that router and will try to do this on the phone with him(very green newbie...lol)Again thanks to all for the help i really appreciate this.

Yep, considering third party firmware support exists only for the micro version of DD-WRT, and you have to do some hoop-jumping (read as use JTAG) for it to work.

DON'T use the CD. Just go to the router's IP address (default should be 192.168.1.1). Then leave the username empty and enter "admin" for the password and bingo, you are in. To access the desired pages, just click on the title at the top of the page. I've highlighted them in the picture from my previous post.

Good luck

Thanks to all for the help.
Ok i got into port trigerring no problem and got all the information from the picture you posted peter_m. He's now getting a message "trigerring ports are overlapping" with a button to continue, and when he clicks continue it takes him back to that message page.I put in a picture (i hope you can see it) that shows the first 2 lines are the ones the linksys rep. did. Should i leave those in? Also where i now have Skype 1,2 and 3 is this ok?or should i have just one configured and enabled? Thanks for the help.

Look at your "Skype 2" entry. I'm sure you will figure it out! Also the first two lines are wrong. Maybe related to an older version of the software.... Just delete them.

EDIT: My BitTorrents settings are non-standard. You will have to also re-configure the BitTorrent to use my non-standard ports.

EDIT: no you would need all 3 skype entries, but that's only if he's using skype...

Again thank you very much for the help.I noticed the error on "Skype 2 " entry , should be 443 all the way.I'll get him to delete the first 2 entries(microsoft and Skype). For the BitTorrent i checked in BitTorrent, options, preferences and listening port is 16177 so i'll edit this to 16177 all the way with checkmark in enable would this be correct?
To delete the other ones i imagine you just take the checkmark out and should be able to delete those entries correct?
I want to thank you again for your time.I think i have a good chance of getting this thing going now.As soon as he's back from work today we'll try this and re-post back in here my success...THANKS AGAIN

Re: v5 WRT54G's suck...

I think Linksys calling the V5 a WRT54G is damaging to their branding. It'd have been nicer if they gave it a new product id.

Re: WRT54G version5

Hi ibanez7,
look like you are on the right track. For deleting an entry, removing the check mark is not enough, it just disables it and keeps it for future use. You need to delete the label and then put zeros for all the port numbers.

Just a quick note, when you reply to a post in this forum, it is always best to use the button on the far right "post reply". This way the previous poster gets a notification...

Let us know how it works out, cheers!
