| I want to thank DSL Extreme for wasting my time.
I just wanted to say thank you to DSL Extreme for WASTING MY TIME. I spent sooooooo much time trying to clean my system thinking I have spyware or a virus because of the so-called search feature.
I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to reformat my drive, reinstall Windows, and then still have the same problem.
Thank you very, very much! Why am I so thankful? You made my decision a little bit easier to not renew with you when my contract expires within the next month or so.
Making the page appear as a DSL Extreme themed site it would have been okay, I suppose, but the way this was presented is unspeakable, horrendous and utterly despicable.
Why don't you give your customers a discount with this "feature"? This "feature" doesn't 'help' computer illiterate people, it only makes YOU extra revenue. And probably look-up-results (whoever they are) tracks us. What's next, selling our information?
You really ruined the good name of DSL Extreme. |

But with adware/spyware/etc getting very publicized, how many non-savy users will fall victim to the same problem? If the intent of the redirect is to help new users, they should make it very clear that the page they are redirected to is associated with DSL Extreme and is supposed to help them, so they don't think they are infected. -- The question isn't "what are we going to do," the question is "what aren't we going to do?" - Ferris |

If you reformatted your drive because of a 404 redirect and reinstall the OS, then that's funny! |

| reply to 2beXcustomer DSLExtreme should have made it clear to its customers that they were doing the redirecting and not some malicious application. And they should have made alternative DNS servers available right from the beginning, thereby allowing "advanced" users to permanently bypass this from the start.
Anyway, I still think that this redirecting is a terrible idea (since it is the configuration by default and breaks internet standards). -- The two biggest things: the universe & human stupidity --Albert Einstein |

| reply to 2beXcustomer In fairness, when I initially used DSLExtreme's live tech support, the first, second and third response was I must have spyware and to install/run a detection/removal program. Only when I rather vehemently insisted it was not a spyware problem did the online tech apparently check and discovered it was indeed a change in the DNS server protocol. Naturally, he and later the phone-based tech I later talked to told me simply to "opt-out" and keep the cookie to avoid the problem. Obviously that advice was also. wrong. Although I agree reformatting/reinstalling OS is somewhat extreme, it is an understandable reaction if someone is not overly tech savvy or believes they may have spyware on their syste. |

Gee, I don't know. If a browser starts taking me places I didn't ask it to go, my first inclination is that the machine is infected with something. That's the MO for a good number of machines infected with spyware.
As much as I want this to go away, if they must do this, the page needs to look like an official DSLX page.

| reply to 2beXcustomer Yes, I am not an "advanced" computer user or a computer expert. Does that mean I am not welcome to DSL Extreme? Is DSL Extreme only for "advanced" computer users who can figure out that their own Internet Service Provider redirects you to a server called "http://wwa.look-up-results.com/search?qo=" ?
I chose DSLX is for the great customer service (which I rarely contacted) and the other reason was to support the local, small business in my community in the S.F. Valley.
As a "non-advanced" member of DSLX, I got by pretty well until this event, which wasn't obviously thought through.
I use my computer for things including business/finance so spyware is a serious concern for me, and that was the reason I reformatted and reinstalled. It may have been extreme, but what else could I do aftr I tried everyhing, running scanners, etc.
When the problem still occurred after I reinstalled I thought I would ask my ISP on the forum if they have spyware on their end which is causing me to see this, and when I read the previous post about this "feature", it was just infuriating. |
