DSLExtreme should have made it clear to its customers that they were doing the redirecting and not some malicious application. And they should have made alternative DNS servers available right from the beginning, thereby allowing "advanced" users to permanently bypass this from the start.
Anyway, I still think that this redirecting is a terrible idea (since it is the configuration by default and breaks internet standards).
