| Installation guides Hi, i am getting sbc/at&t dsl and i want to install a filter for a rotary phone. I am looking for help as to how i can adapt it to a line filter that was sent to me. I have experience with making rj45 cables and wiring shouldn't be a problem. Thanks. | |

| Like I said earlier it is hardwired in the phone set, if you take the cover off the wall phone you should see the IW wired to terminals T,R,G which is TIP, Ring and ground. SATASI -- He who knows never speak..... He who speaks never knows....... | |

| First, you have to get a modular rj11, second, you have to make a short modular cable on one end and open face on the other end so you can hardwire the open face end into the phone....once all that is done just put your filter in the modular jack and plug the cable you made for the phone in the phone side of the filter. SATASI -- He who knows never speak..... He who speaks never knows....... | |

SATASI I was going to do that in the first place, i just needed some information as if it is going to work or not. So basically, u want me to crimp on a rj11 connector at the end of the rotary phone and then have that plug into the microfilter than stick the microfilter into the jack?

| Re: Installation guides Ok, i have a rotary phone that at the end is connected through a jack and not plugged in to it. I have no way of installing the filter to the rotary phone because as i said it is installed through the jack, don't ask my how, and not plugged in. So there is no rj11 connecter at the end of this rotary phone.
I am asking for tips on what i can do about it. Maybe this jack is filtered already i don't know, i need info. I need to know if i have to crimp new rj-11 connecters at the end of the rotary phone line and then plug it into the dslfilter and then dsl filter into jack. Sorry if i didn't explain through i guess i thought it was a common problem.

| Re: Installation guides You can either fix this or have a whole-house splitter installed.
Basically just take the jack apart and disconnect the telephone. Then replace the jack with a proper RJ-11 jack. If you want to continue to use the old phone you need to replace the telephone cable with one that has an RJ-11 jack on the end. This will be plugged into the filter which is plugged into the jack.
It's just 2 wires ( red and green ) and really not that much work.

| well a rotary phone can be either a desktop or wall phone...now what you have is a hardwired wall phone....goes back to the seventies when we hardwired all phone sets......there a wall plates for dsl but you have to convert the backside of the wall phone with a modular backplate........you will need a kit to convert the backplate for a WE 554 phone to modular so you can use a wall plate that has the filter built in. | I'm not familiar with rotary phone connection methods (I do remember that their wires were screwed into little tin boxes), but to cover some other aspects of your situation, is that the only phone on the line? I'm just checking to see if there any chance that there is already a POTS splitter out at the NID and a home run leading to a jack expressly for DSL in the place? This situation would not need any of the microfilters. | |

For that line there are only one other that has a jack and adding a microfilter is no problem, but for some reason my grandma wants the rotary phone.

| This is a problem that would be solved with a pocket knife and a screw driver faster then talking about it here.
Cut the dang cable. Strip the red and green leads and connect it to an RJ-11 jack. Pick a jack that can be surface mounted if it's coming out by a baseboard or pick a jack that is recess mounted if it's coming out of the wall. Mount the jack on the wall, throw the old rotary phone away and get a modern telephone. Otherwise splice an RJ-11 jack on the old cable to the phone if you still want to use it.
This isn't rocket science. I was solving problems like this in old houses over 25 years ago when I was 7 years old.

The problem I said earlier is that my grandma wants it and i guess someone else came, maybe a sbc tech, and installed it back lol.

| You can do many different modifiations to get that to work and yes you can modify the filter they sent you any way that you need to. My parents house had the older style lines and I did the mods and used CAT 3 wire from Radio Shack to run the line along with the filtered line to other locations in the house. Make sure you have your wire color codes down since that older wiring sometimes uses different colors. | |
