| reply to KawiG5 said by KawiG5 :The P4 has a bit of a hefty lead. I'm still surprised it's still #1. I'm not sure it's all that "hefty" - I'm thinking a lot of the "Other" are AMD cpu's left out of the list. If you add the current numbers for specific Intel/AMD cpus, you get 55/33, but there's 10% in Other.
The 10% is probably a mix of Opterons, Xeons, AMD X2's and the occassional PowerPC.
But I'd actually expect Intel to probably hold the lead from the simple fact that most off-the shelf systems come with Intel vs AMD CPUs. Think of all the Dell's people have bought - pure Intel thru and thru for the desktop and laptop lines.
It would be interesting to tackle it from another angle - what types of systems are those with the top points/hour running. I looked at the current (5/26) list and tried to correlate names in it to names in this thread and couldn't come up with enough info to be truly meaningful, but I did note that three in that list (SpyderWoman [whose machines are actually mine physically], is all AMD, seagreen is AMD based, and poppster is running 2 AMDs and one older Intel system. But you'd also have to find out who's running 24/7 and who isn't. -- ...then THINK! again!! |

| I think in an even match up with everything being as equal as you could make it, the AMD's would out crunch the Intel's hands down.
As it is, there are two many variables, especially with UD, because something as dumb and out of your control as a bad network connection between you and TX can alter your rating. -- Team Discovery |

| reply to KawiG5 currently crunching with:
Intel Pentium D 840 (2.8ghz dual core) - currently alternate between TSC and UD (I can run both simultaneously but won't until I resolve some cooling - and noise issues)
Intel Pentium 4 2.4Ghz - 100% UD
Sun UltraSPARC IIi 360Mhz - TSC
also have a sparc box with two 300Mz UltraSPARC II processors - offline awaiting some parts
one other box, my "new" web/mail/dns server, has two 400MHz USII processors.. thinking since I don't have a high profile/high traffic site I just may setup TSC on that one..

1 edit | reply to KawiG5 I just added an Athlon 64 X2 5000, I'm not very impressed with it compared to the 4800. It is still crunching very respectable work, however I feel that the Conroe will run rings around it. My next purchase... -- Help Find Cures-Team Discovery |

In comparing stats, points are a poor comparison of just cpu. Memory, Disk, and Network all contribute. Points are meant to "even out" systems as a whole.
Results, OTOH, may be more meaningful but since jobs are not consistent that isn't really useful either.
To do a fair comparison of AMD vs Intel the exact same jobs need to be given to both over a period of time and the total number of results should be compared.
I don't really keep track of my crunchers' progress other than to make sure they're all still cooking (literally!) I lost a mainboard a while ago and stuck in an AMD Athlon 900 for a while - after all (to paraphrase lilhurricane ) every bit counts. |
