[Wired] Can someone help me set this THING up!?

I have recently purchased the Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GC broadband router from ebay. The box came with out a disk and I was woundering is this disk was nessecery for use of the hardware?

Also, my main concern lies with how difficult it is to set this thing up! I have never used a router before and rely on my cable modem, untill my dad decided he wanted the internet downstares too.

Though the router is wireless, I have not really entertained the idea of wireless networking because I fear the loss of speed and reliablity so, I have tryed to hook wires up to each of the computers, then the cable modem to my router, however, once I do this, I understand I am too configure the router on the web based setup, But I do not know how to find my DNS server, and I've had lost of different suggestions of how i should set up my IP address.

I am VERY confused because this is the first step I've taken towards home networking and im pretty much alone with it so I was woundering if anyone could give me any guided advice and tell me how they did it.

My last question is, once i plug in the router, an additional icon appears in my Network Connections called "Internet gateway" and is constantly set to disabled, and when I try to enable it I am greeted with the message "Connection failed!", Is this because I havnt yet configured my router or is it because of some fault?

Because I can't even access the internet on just one computer while useing the router, finding help is quite frustrating because of having to keep switching back to my cable modem alone (like now). So any "human" help would be fantastic. Thanks

Btw I realise my spellings are ridiculas lol

No you don't need software, the CD that comes with most new router is just an super easy "wizard" that runs on your machine. You can still access your router through the web admin on them using Internet Explorer.

First, if your unit did not come with any instrux, here's the PDF guide for it.

Now, usually with Linksys products, their routers, by default, run a DHCP service. Any computers connected to them via ethernet cable, if they have their TCP set to obtain automatically, will pull a 192.168.1.1XX address, with correct gateway..and once the router is connected to the broadband, correct DNS.

So point your browser to »192.168.1.1
A password challenge should come up, leave the username blank, and the password is admin

You'll see your setup fields there, to configure it for DSL with PPPoE credentials, or to cable. If you have cable and had another device plugged into the cable modem, you'll want to power off your cable modem for 10 minutes to so, to make it "forget" the MAC of the last device connected to it.

The internet connection icon you're talking about, that's because the router is a UPnP compliant device. Once it's connected to your broadband, you can enable that on your PC..and you'll have internet access.

Re: [Wired] Can someone help me set this THING up!?

Hey thanks for the reply. Only, I am still a bit stuck.

I got onto the WebApp and set the service to PPPoE, not sure what the user name and password is for, or if I should tamper with the routers IP. On the other services such as the default Automatic - DHCP, I dont know what I should type in for DNS because I have that and my IP address set to be obtained automatically. Do I need to contact my ISP for anything? Because my ISP (Ntl) has a ridiculas information service

Thanks though..

I'm not familiar with your ISP....is it cable, or DSL?

PPPoE..the username and password are part of how the PPPoE authentication process works..it's basically similar to the dial up adapters we used years ago with dial up modems...you'd have a username and a password you entered in there..to allow you to connect to your ISP. Point to Point Protocol...in the case of DSL, over Ethernet. PPPoE.

If it's cable, you'd probably leave your WAN setup to "obtain auto".

DHCP...just leave it at the default..once the router logs onto the ISP..it'll capture the correct DNS settings and relay that via DHCP to your computers.

Re: [Wired] Can someone help me set this THING up!?

Ntl is just a cable service here in the UK.

Ahh I see well I don't think I'll be taking the PPPoE road then, but is there anything else you would recommend doing, I am pretty much still on the Basic Setup and everything is at default (apart from the timezone).

Oh and btw thanks for the tip about turning the modem off for 10 minuites it's prevented a very anoying "Limited or no connection" status I used to keep getting

Well I THINK you have to have it "all ethernet" and nothing connected through USB. I think ive got mine connected properly but if your stuck on that bit then you'll HATE when you have to configure it
