| DSLX speeds on Pacbell lines vs. Pacbell speeds
Greetings everyone,
I'm considering a subscription to DSLX & have a couple questions.
Pacbell's fastest advertised ADSL speed is 3000/384.(Pro plan) I'm curious how you can get up to 6000 out of their lines. Does Pacbell cap their customers & lift the cap for other ISPs??? Doesn't make sense to me.
If I can't expect to see a significant increase in speed, it'll be tough to justify the expense of your 6000/608 plan which sounds pretty good to me. We were getting about 2872 from the Pro plan at first, it's diminished since then. A Pacbell field mgr said we were the "first pair on the hub." I don't know if that meant we were the first to order service off that hub or we are the first location-wise. Is a hub an RT?
Now if I order the 6000/608 plan & it turns out the best I can get is 2872, is there a margin of time that I can downgrade my service without significant penalty? Doesn't seem fair that I should have to pay for what I can't get. I don't remember anything in the "Terms" addressing this issue. However, I have a propensity to sleep while wading through legalese. Thank you kindly for any advice. |

| SBC does offer the 6M plan, but does not advertise it for the most part. If you call customer service, I believe you might be able to get it now.
If you can get the line stats from your current connection at 3M, it will be a good indicator of whether you will be able to get 6M or not. -- The question isn't "what are we going to do," the question is "what aren't we going to do?" - Ferris |

| reply to RnVteam Pacbell's fastest advertised speed is not 3000/384. When I go to SBC's site, it gives me the option for 1.5 to 6.0mbps/384-608kbps for $49/month.
That said, SBC-ASI sometimes offers speed packages that SBC-Yahoo does not choose to offer. 6mbps was avaialble from DSLExtreme only for a period of time.

| reply to RnVteam Based on what you are saying it sounds as though you line may not be able to support the higher speed package. SBC may be looking at your current line readings instead of just your distance results.
I would recommend that you ask SBC for your current line readings. We can take a look at those and determine what the highest speed package your line can hold is. You can either get those by calling SBC directly or posting in the SBC direct forum here on BBR.
Another possibility is that you are currently provisioned via a CO and a remote terminal (RT) has opened up in your area. If you send me an IM with your DSL phone number I can see if an RT is available in your area. -- George General Manager DSLExtreme Will work for reviews. |

| Hi George, Thank you kindly for your timely response. We've decided to go ahead with the order for your 6M/608 plan. Dealing with the folks at SBC is an excercise in frustration. However, I did find out that they use the term "hub" interchangably with "RT". That's good because we're located very close to a new one. We should get a significant speed boost with your service. I'm so looking forward to dealing with rational people.
Also, Thank you to deblin & djrobx for your considered advise. I appreciate your time & caring to respond. A pleasant day to all. |
