Because, years ago, it would try to do things that people didn't like.

I use it! I actually like RealPlayer! Yeah, I said it!

As for trying to take over... it ASKS what files you want associated with Real. Alot like QT does(and other player softwares).

MPC even asks what files to associate with MPC(Onoes!).
Mine behaves, can't say why other people have a hard time with it.

I don't mind realplayer either. I tend to prefer it over windows media player. (I don't know why, but i hate wmp!)
