[BOINC] Focus - What Think Ye?

The topic of discussion is team focus. This discussion is only open to members of Team Starfire.

We started off here as a SETI@Home club and succeeded on a global scale, becoming one of the top ranked teams in the world. SET@Home made the transition to the BOINC platform, and now, many other projects use BOINC. Most of the leading SETI@Home teams also support other projects running on the BOINC platform.

Officially at this time we only support SETI@Home, Einstein@Home, LHC@Home and Climateprediction.net. We would like to broaden our scope to support any project running on BOINC deemed worthy of our cycles and likely meeting certain guidelines, such as not profiting anyone. We need to do this to ensure that we remain a force on the DC scene, not only with SETI, but with distributed computing in general.

Already, we do have unofficial teams with Predictor@home, Rosetta@home, World Community Grid. Our hope was that other clubs at BBR might welcome these teams into their midst but understanding the differences between them and us we can see it won't happen. But we do need to discuss and support these other BOINC projects if we have members who wish to run these projects, and we do.

The proposal: That BroadbandReports.com Team Starfire's focus become BOINC and any project running on it. That our primary focus continue to be SETI@Home and that our members be encouraged to keep SETI their primary project, but at the same time that we encourage the expansion of membership and participation in our other BOINC projects.

The end goal is to propel our team to being the leading global BOINC team. Without focusing on more than just SETI we can't do that.

BroadbandReports.com Team Starfire Global BOINC! Not just one project, not just one country, the world!

My feelings are that it's about time we do this. We are a very successful Seti team, but in order to grow our team in the way I think we can, we need to expand.

A little over 4 months ago, we had a crisis here that we've now overcome. Some of the questions asked during that time was how do we grow our forum and team more effectively. In order to grow Starfire even bigger and better, I believe we'll be able to attract more new members to Starfire and BBR by offering and supporting a larger range of Boinc projects.

I agree with Kinguni, that we don't want to take on every boinc project out there, but pick and choose the worthy ones.

We made a big change when classic ended, and a lot of us, myself included, had to change and adapt in moving from classic to boinc. We as a team need to further change in light of the opportunities the Boinc platform affords us. We made the change to Boinc Seti in a way that made the team even stronger and better than we were under Classic, and now we have the opportunity to take Starfire to the next level by supporting not only Seti, but the Bonic platform and the virtually limitless possibilities it affords the DC community.

Lets do this!

Any group running Boinc and doing a not for profit service deserves support.

I think it is fair to say that all Boinc participants of this site are welcome to join and have the access to a forum of their own and if it is under the Team Starfire umbrella fine by me.
But as Xaak just posted it should be a group decision as to what is going to be considered.

Diversity is the backbone of success so let us move it to be an acceptable plan and with the input of all the members making it work and forming the rules.

With one Caveat, I think this is a proper thing to do.
The Caveat is that it does not cause a reduction in any of the groups numbers relating to members or work outputs.

I see all of the other top teams really having major support for all BOINC projects. Actually I was quite floored by the active participants in other BOINC projects a while back when I went checking on them. It certainly seems to be the future of DC computing, as virtually every major DC project has or is working on something to run under the BOINC umbrella.

It's a natural, since the client allows you to seamlessly control all of your DC projects with the BOINC shell. Personally, I'm all for the Seti project, have registered on a few other projects, but they hold no interest to me.

Certainly, DSLR needs a home for the other BOINC projects. There is just too much interest worldwide in this engine for us not to have a place for BOINCers to hang their hat on.

Since we are unofficially supporting a range of them, I see no problem with it myself.

The future of distributed computing is Boinc. As time goes on we'll see more and more projects using the Boinc platform and we'd better be prepared for it.

We need to adjust our way of thinking if we are to thrive in this new environment. I know it will be hard for some people to let go of the old ways and structure, but let go of it they must if they want to see continued growth of our team(s).

I say grab the bull by the horns and let's get it done.

Resistance Is Futile! Since Boinc is fast becoming the standard for distributed computing then it needs to be embraced not scorned. Having our team focus on Boinc will bring in those that have turned away from other DC projects that don't run on this platform. This can only be a win-win situation for us and Boinc.

Agreed! Wholeheartedly, in fact.
It seems many regulars here are already crunching for more than just one cause, so why not make it official?

I do believe this is the next step in DC computing so it only makes sense to have a BOINC focus here. With more and more projects building on the BOINC platform everyday it will only help to bring in more diverse people to our international team.

Does this proposal impact the Crunchenstein or will it remain dedicated to SETI? Or is that a topic for a future discussion in the Crunchenstein forums?

As a board member of Crunchenstein I think I can safely say for now that Crunchenstein will remain dedicated to SETI@Home, as that was it's intended purpose, and I believe that a vote of Crunchenstein members would be required to change that.
