Qwest Does Listen, Qwest Does Care, There is a god.

Back in the Spring of 1995 I received a note attached to my door, “US West will be installing new cable in your apartment next week for a new Cable TV and modem service” Modem service? What the heck is that? I have AOL 2.0 can I use this modem service to connect to it? Why would I want to?

I moved out of that apartment before I ever did get to see it however it was the seeds of a never ending spat between Cox and Qwest in the Omaha area. US West was going to compete with Cox for cable service? Gutsy move! They Lost. They stopped building that cable system; I now live about 4 miles past where it ended in a new development.

Yes this system was “Redlined” not a house under $80k in it’s path and most over $200k, “Nice” houses for Omaha in 1995.

The Qwest merger happened and what a mess that became, Cox started kicking their butts all over the place they now have something like 40%+ of dial tone in Omaha. At my office our account rep was taken away, they could not even get a business plan for a DS3 done for a building less than a block from a CO. Qwest became a joke.

Over the years I have had so many battles with Qwest I can’t even count, I have been billed for T1 lines in buildings that have been knocked down and turned into parking lots.
I have a check that hangs on my bulletin board for $0.01, the refund from that T1 line once it finally got corrected. Other than services I can’t get from Cox in my office such as Analog DID’s and DSL lines it’s been too hard to do business with Qwest.

My DSL line has always been fast enough.
The latency (aka interleave) plays complete havoc with my VPN, my Toshiba Office VOIP phone echo’s and pops.

I have complained about interleave since I joined this board in 2001, when I moved and had to give up my CAP line. I have read the 100's of messages about hating interleave.

Today there is a different Qwest at work, and it’s nice to see.

I have bragged about my Qwest bundle many times on this board, it can’t be beat, triple play for under $100.00. Yes there is a Spirit Of Service and it starts at CEO Dick Notebaert.

Today it’s official, my interleave was removed and yes the CEO made it happen.
He responded to my request at 4:45am mountain time, just 6 hours after I sent it to him.

I received personal service from a man who easily could have sent me back the form letter I expected thanking me for my business and telling me to call support.

This afternoon someone called to tell me it was done, just 36 hours from that first email. I have attached my “New” trace route to DSLR and it’s awesome. They gave me their direct line so I can call and have it turned back on if need be.

My VPN works perfect and I have been on the phone all night trying it out.

Keep in mind this may not be for you. You may need interleave to make your line work.
I am lucky, 6 month old wires, 1 year old Remote Terminal I am 2 blocks from it.

Thanks to all the Qwest people on this forum, I will not name names to protect the innocent and your PM’s but you know who you are.

Thank You Mr. Notebaert, thanks for the personal emails without disclaimers and without a generic email signature.
Thanks for bringing back innovation and listening to your customers.

Thanks for making the investment in Fiber 7MB gear on a Remote Terminal. When you have IPTV or whatever give me a call, I will even give up my beloved DirecTV Tivo.

Thanks for bringing innovation, jobs and the Spirit Of Service back to Omaha.

I promise to stop saying "Ride The Darkness" whenever anyone says Qwest in my office.

I have the fastest internet in Omaha, and it’s not from Cox and costs a whole lot less.

Nice, I live in Omaha too. Well heres my similar but different story. I first had Cox and I had signal issues (all it was my modem being amped when not.) I switched to tconl or (the Qwest Telechoice) cable internet you mentioned. I had a seperate line installed for qwest. I think tconl isant allowed to upgrade speeds because Qwest is a telco. It is funny though because it almost had the same hops as you are. Before the oma-core-1 hop i had a different oma-core-07 or something that im assuming was for the tconl users.

Unfortuantley that core-07 router was horrible and had lots of ping jumps and bandwith wasn't capped so speed had major drops. Early mournings it was basically the same as the connection you posted but later in the day the system went hectic. Im hoping TCONL fixes their router/routing. I sent lots of emails to their tech support but nothing really happened and my problems were forwarded to the 'head admin'.

Hopefully they will get better hardware and manage bandwith more because i may go back for the upload. The speed was about 3.5MB and 1MB Upload ($30 a month) when running fresh. The latency jumps and speed drops made me switch back to Cox preffered 4/512 deal. I figured the amp i had for the Cox line i still had for Cox tv was amped and i had the same signal problems with disconnecting and finally removed the amp and walla no more disconnects and lower and more consistant pings with Cox and no speed drops compared to Tconl.

I can't get DSL at my location accoring to the Qwest website and my CO is like 22,000 ft away from me. And you say your RT is about 2 blocks away from you... Im curious of where abouts you live because you said on the edge of telechoice which i live like S 180th and sord of on the edge. Im just wondering how far the RT you connect to is from me or better yet what is the location of the RT because maybe Qwest's website hasnt been updated to show if I have DSL availibility.

Yeah the interleaving being removed sounds great and i hope Qwest will keep it up, they also should atleast get their TCONL fixed up in Omaha. But for me Cox has been the best and better then TCONL when TCONL is running its best. If I really wanted the best then I would go with Cox preffered 9/1 but i'm not really wanting to pay for preffered because the speeds are nice it is just the download/upload ratio doesn't seem worth it.

it's not a first; that's what I was saying in the other thread. While it doesn't happen all the time it certainly isn't uncommon.

Do you have line statistics from before and after? It would be an interesting comparison to see if attenuation, SNR, CRC values change. You should of course see no RS FEC errors since those are directly a result of interleave settings.

Glad to hear man. In your situation as I told you on PM interleaving off was doable and easy because of the terminal you are off of and the short distance between you and the RT. I doubt you will have issues with it off to have to turn it back on. I did testing with my circuit which is almost identical to yours. I have 900 feet of cable between me and the same type of RT. I turned off my interleaving to find my SNR went up. I turned it back on just to make sure I wasn't seeing things and sure enough they went down. So back off interleaving went. It is noticable with it off when it comes to browsing, games etc. In some situations having it off is doable and actually helps in several ways to your connection. Good to hear your praise.

In my case i went from 16db up 15db down on 7168/896 with interleaving off to 8db up 10db down with interleaving on.
FYI to those on the 2wire 2700HG from Qwest you will have lower SNR compared to ciscos and actiontecs which are showing higher SNR. Hopefully fixed in a future firmware update.

I wish I had the before readings, my router is in a rack in the basement and running transparent so I don't think I can use commander, My Netscreen does the auth.

I will drag the laptop down there later to get my current readings.

Qwest is not permitted to deploy DSL in Telechoice areas, AKA they can't compete against themselves.

The Upstream on Telechoice is always been awesome, we had an employee on VPN to a Qwest Frame T1 and it was like sitting in the office.

My RT is at 192nd and F, I live at 190th and D. I assume it's fed from 168th and Harrison since that matches my telephone prefix.

There is another RT in front of Lowe's on 188th and Center, thats where I thought mine was fed from.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Telechoice, however with them it's nice to call in for help since they are here in Omaha.

Well ones cable and ones dsl thats like apples to oranges when you are talking fiber fed dslams. Here in Idaho my cableone 6mb cable gets smoked by my 7mb dsl and thats just in webbrowsing alone you can tell the difference. In downloads the cable coughs, spits and chokes to death. Hence when I called I told the lady I would like to cancel because my DSL smokes your cable. Then the line went silent.

I have had even better results with this modem...

Heh, I had a chat with one of my local ISP's tech doods..whom I know by first name, why I keep them. He was both amused and miffed that this happened. He's a real tech, yet like some, can't get good range. He therefore has cable and was jealous of me the customer for being able to get 7M DSL. Even more miffed that I'm not taking it, but usng the 1.5. For me, $15/mo isnt worth the extra speed. Meanwhile he talks about his crappy cable..poor guy.

We both are awaiting big fiber lighting here in the next year with ADSL2+ and new projects in town, we have soooo much dark fiber here it's silly. Supposedly we also have more fiber per capita than any city in the U.S.

I want FTTH, dangit

My ISP runs it's own DC locally, so they have a bit of an advantage..they have serious multi-homed connects. (my first hops go right to XO/Level3)

Practically sitting on MAE West don't hurt either

I am glad for TheBeer..gj for gettin' 'er done.

Would you be maybe willing and nice enough , to get into a bit more detail on how you succeeded in having your interleaving removed? It appears as though you contacted Dick at his own personal email address and went from there? Please elaborate!

Kinda related to the topic. My friend didnt qualify for DSL because he was on a DLC pair gain. I emailed the marketing department of qwest and asked for help. Well the main DSL engineer for eastern washington called me and asked what my friends number and address were. Next day, they moved his pair from the pair gain to whatever so now he has DSL and is happy. It is kinda sad that you have to go through these hoops to get things done but at least they do get done when the right people know there is a problem.

To be honest companies like Qwest should have an escalated services number for support, people who can and will do what it takes to get customer issues resolved, that are resolvable. Then have people monitor boards like this one and give out that number. It would take some research to get those numbers however those who took the time would get the service.

I guarantee the PUC in each state has those numbers, I have had to pass issues to the PUC before to get someone to listen and boy do they.

I make 1 call a week related to our Telephone, Internet or cellular service. Ordering phones, changing plans, common stuff. Companies who give me a rep (Cox, US Cellular, Sprint(not PCS)) get 95% of my business, I know I can count on my US Cellular rep to get me a phone ASAP, even if it's for my wife for valentines day.

Qwest (US West) use to have that kind of service, my former rep Deb Guard was TOPS and was just down the street. Their network engineers have tracked down channel banks for me in the middle of the night and pushed those buttons in just the right places.

Unfortunately Telecom has become a commodity, price drives the market place not service. US Cellular is a good example of the perfect mix. Companies like Qwest need to re-invest in service AND still compete on price. Nextel Partners is a good example of a Mafia, someone please put them out of their misery and buy them out already. Qwest would have fallen in that column 2 years ago.

Yes I contacted Dick at his Qwest.com email. From what people have been saying he will respond to ANY email that is short, to the point and not unreasonable.

He forwarded my email to someone (who I did not ever talk to) then they forwarded it to someone else in Denver I assume who made the changes and returned my call.

Our Iowa office that has been plagued with echo in their IP phones is just tickled pink that our system finally works right. Having conversations with them always felt like you were talking over each other, like on a 1/2 duplex speaker phone. We had them logging each time in our help desk and those stopped the day before I was told the switch had happened. IE I had not told them to expect a change, and they noticed it immediately. Can't say I am too disappointed at home either.

If you need his email please feel free to PM me, I don't really want to get him spammed by posting all this info in the forum, I have given it to a couple people already however with some ingenuity you can figure it out anyway.
