Since we are excluding security applications, I voted "Manually" - I like to have as much control (if any)as I can master when it comes to OS updates/patching.

But I usually recommend Check Automatic or Partially Automatic approach for less experienced home users. I think that danger of being late with a new patch overweights chances of someone unwillingly swallowing a screwy update.

If you tend to forget little matters or have better things to do than following daily/weekly/monthly what to update - automate things.
