Re: TV Security! What's NEXT?

If you dig around you will also find a patent for the apparatus used in A Clockwork Orange to keep a human subject from closing his eyes or turning away from the screen... Oh well... I'm sure gas chambers were patented also.

I don't suppose this is a patent issued to a good guy who will never ever implement it and who will never ever issue licences to others... ?

No? Oh.
You may think I am joking about this but what if this took off?

You enter a store, pick a TV out, look at the price, you see another TV same make same model Hundreds of dollars cheaper, you scratch your head, ask the store clerk..

"What's up with this? The same TV here is hundreds of dollars cheaper and the same make and model next to it costs this!"

The Clerk responds....

"Oh, sir the CHEAPER one is subsidized by advertisers, and restricts you to change channels during a commercial, that's why the price is so different"

Suddenly this starts spreading to MP3 Players, Cell Phone service plans, radios, and so on.

Personally, I don't think devices should have ADMIN privileges without providing passwords for their Logon ID

Surely there must/will be a patent for apparatus and method of allowing switching from a channel during an advertisement display protected by Patent Application 20060070095 et al

That would be "security" as in "protecting someone else's ability to annoy me with worthless crap", right?
NO, that would be "Security" as in not allowing you to leave a thread until AFTER the commercial played

It could give a whole new meaning to "DRM"?

It's ours
You can't copy it
You can't leave until it's over!

And? What's yer point?
My Point is that this concept could apply to many things down the road, it takes control of a device, currently only a TV. But it is the principal of being able to "Deny you access to something you own".

If you take this another level, like MP3 players and radios maybe playing back your voice mail as well as other things I thought it might be important to post.

Kind Code A1
Newton; Philip Steven ; et al. March 30, 2006

Apparatus and method for preventing switching from a channel during an advertisement display

Abstract

An apparatus (270) and method is disclosed for preventing a viewer from switching from a channel when an advertisement is being displayed on the channel. The apparatus (270) and method comprises an advertisement controller (270) in a video playback device (150) that (1) prevents a viewer of a direct (non-recorded) broadcast from switching channels when an advertisement is displayed, and (2) prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast forwarding the recorded program in order to skip past advertisements that were recorded with the program. A viewer may either watch the advertisements or pay a fee in order to be able to change channels or fast forward when the advertisements are being displayed.
