@Level3.net | Advice?
Hello, I'm a beginner in this field and need some advice. What I need to do is create a ten mile internet link. The ground here dipps up and down probably 15', and there are 50-70' trees in the way. How much to you think this would cost? |

Otherwise, budget ~$500 for 2.4Ghz and ~$800 for 5.8Ghz radio equipment and PoE accessories. |

@Level3.net | reply to Nathan Haus I'm on dial-up right now so I can't give you my coordinates... So how much do you think the tower would cost? |

| reply to Nathan Haus I'm not sure, but I think I might be able to rent space on a tower on one end. So that would leave me with building just one tower. But approx. how much do you think a 120+ foot tower would cost? And do you know how high a tower can go without having warning lights on it? |

And do you know how high a tower can go without having warning lights on it? You can go up to 199 feet before the FAA gets involved, BUT, it may be even less than that depending on how close to an airport You are, or the ground level that the tower is being placed on(AGL) -- »www.wavecrazy.net Join WISPA today! »www.wispa.org/ |

| reply to Nathan Haus My 120' Trylon cost about $10,000.00 by the time you figure cranes, concrete, tower cost, permits, and labor. I did all of the labor with my construction crews, had my own backhoes to dig the foundation, I get significant discounts from Hutton (where I bought the tower). You can definately do it cheaper with used towers, but I did not want to go that route. |

| reply to Nathan Haus You don't necessarily need 120' towers on each end. The lowest antenna we have is at 125' at the office, I'm 9 miles out with a 40' mast and get good connection. You may have to have height on one end, but not necessarily on the other if you have LOS.
Coordinates would be your best route to ensure a good link. |

| I notice something very tall in Huntington north-west near Theater Av.
You could use a few 2.4Ghz hops - serving a few customers along the way. There are lots of farmhouses along the way -maybe a few silos too? |

1 edit | reply to Nathan Haus Close pic should be of your house. Large pic is of the area in general. Mark the large pic for where you are attempting to shoot to and we can then see what you are dealing with.
edit: If the large map doesn't show the other point, let me know and I can zoom out further. |

| reply to Nathan Haus Depending on what is on that ridge, this may not work with only one hop. Here are two link paths. One with 40' on each end and one with 100' and 60'. You may want to look for a spot on the ridge to put a repeater.
Gerard, it is Radio Mobile Deluxe. Search for threads on it in here. There are several that show how to's on it! If you can't locate them, buzz me later and I can round up the links to them. |

| reply to Nathan Haus From the picture it looks like my house is at a lower elevation then the town? I would need the 100' tower at my house then... So just off the top of your head, how much do you think a tower above 100' might cost? I might even need a tower taller then that, as I've got a few 90-110' trees directly where the tower will probably go(figures).
Thanks, Nathan |

| reply to Nathan Haus The location on the left is your house and the one on the right is the spot you marked on the map for me. So, the 100' tower is on the town side of the link. I'll let others comment on the details of the expense of a 100' tower, but probably around $10,000. |

1. You may regret building a 100ft tower and finding out you needed 120ft.
2. There seems to be a very tall building near Theatre avenue in Huntington that you could visit.
3. You can do a multi-hop link using silos and farmhouses located on higher ground. |
