| California Apples???
How conducive of a climate is southern California for growing apples? I am trying to figure out if "regular red apples" can be grown there.I say no but a buddy insists that "regular red apples" are grown there. Say if anyone knows the area it is called Apple Valley California. Thanks -- There is no such thing as a stupid question, and yes, the camel types.

Production Regions
There are five major regions in which apples are grown in California. Historically, apple production was limited to the coastal mountains north and south of San Francisco Bay, in the Sierra foothills east of Sacramento, and in the Southern California mountains. Recently apple production has expanded into the Central Valley, with new plantings of Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, and other varieties. Important coastal apple producing counties are Sonoma in the North Coast, and Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast region. However the major apple production areas are now in the San Joaquin Valley with Kern, Fresno, San Joaquin, and Madera counties being the leading producers Southern California mountain regions still have a few orchards. -- With metta, Dan |

1 edit | reply to sheik28 Lucerne Valley, which is about 30 minutes east of Apple Valley, has a number of successful and active apple orchards. All Apple Valley is growing these days is houses and shopping centers.
This is in the high desert, which experiences a fairly cold winter, something apples need if I recall correctly. -- Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est. |

| reply to sheik28 Well I live in Apple Valley and there are a couple of things I can tell you. I've yet to see an apple tree here and it doesn't look like a valley to me!
Like others have already stated, Julian and Oak Glen are known for their apple orchards. There is an oriental gentleman in Lucerne Valley who grows some kick ass Fuji apples. He used to bring an occasional bag in for the employees when I worked at HomeBase. Those apples reminded me of a good woman. Sweet, juicy, and firm! -- All the best freaks are here. Please stop staring at me! |

3 edits | reply to sheik28 I love that area (Oak Glenn), we used to go up there for our Church's campouts, great area!
They grow apples up here in NW CA (mostly Mendocino and Sonoma Counties), Pears are the big crop (along with Wine Grapes of course) in Lake and Mendocino Counties though, we get enough cold and freezing in the winter to support good Pear production, they need that to do well. -- See the BOOMING railroads of today&tommorrow »www.gorail.org See HEAVY DUTY freight&passenger action@ the Galesburg, IL RailCam! »205.245.189.161:1100/ THE BEST way2travel- »www.amtrak.com »www.amtrakcalifornia.com |

2 edits | reply to sheik28 Most apples require some varying amounts of winter chill in order to produce well. Winter chill is defined as the number of hours where the temperature is below 45°F (or 7°C) with some varieties requiring more winter chill and some less. If you want to grow apples in an area not known for growing apples your best bet would be to ask your county UC Extension agent what grows well in your area. |
