Same thing. Windows Live ID is the new name for Passport. I'm not crazy about having Passport/Live ID but I do some beta testing for MS so I am required to have it for that reason. I never though gave Passport any information like credit card or physical address, etc.

When I first subscribed to the TechNet Security Bulletins that was MANY years ago and there was a different subscription process and my ISP didn't like the process Microsoft used so it (Road Runner) blocked ALL MAIL from Microsoft including these bulletins and any other newsletters one might want to subscribe to. Road Runner didn't bother to notify its customers of the block. I just didn't get the bulletins all of a sudden. When I unearthed the reason finally, I wrote the RR Abuse department and Microsoft and got in the middle of a pissing contest. It took TWO YEARS before Microsoft finally gave in and came up with a registration method for the newsletters that pacified Road Runner Abuse department. In the meantime, I had to subscribe to them using my dslr email account which was not blocking MS communications even though the old way of registering for the newsletters did allow for a lot of abuse and spamming. So, I guess you can partly thank me for the new method of signup.

Microsoft Genuine Advantage tries to phone home EVERY TIME I BOOT UP MY COMPUTER. I know this, because Zone Alarm asks me to give it permission, which I allow sometimes and deny others, based on my mood at the time. Whether I allow or disallow it to phone home makes no apparent difference in the operation of my computer, but I DO NOT LIKE something that is always trying to phone home. I don't trust it.

Set Automatic updates to notify only. That way it will notify you when updates are available, but you have to go to Windows Update to download and install.

This is how my machines are setup.

Just my observation.

I noticed about 6 months ago that I was able to recycle activation keys that I hadn't used in a couple of years. These were keys that came on the original retail release of XP and the XP w/SP1 upgrades.

It used to decline the activate if I tried to reuse them and I would make the obligatory call to a call center in India at 2am to get a manual activation key.....now they go through the internet without a fuss.

So either they have relaxed the activation standards, or have simply placed a time limit to how many you have in a specific period of time. Recycling old keys is a huge money saver, especially when going through a hardware upgrade cycle.

We'll see how long THAT feeling lasts when your valid copy of software is shut down, or you are harassed for being a pirated copy, even though you aren't... and then when you call M/S to ask what's up and they slap you with a $149.99 fee to buy a new key... well, come back and tell us all again how happy you are with M/S in your system.

Don't you find it really odd, in the first place, that they did this and didn't disclose it? Don't you think it's a violation of their privacy agreement? Is THAT enough to make you go "hmmmm"...?

Just wait.. next thing they will do, similar to the RIAA/MPAA, is collect IP information, start getting that info from the ISP, and start sending summons to appear in court for pirated software...

Don't think it's not coming? Wait until they "perfect" the WGA and "get the bugs out of it"... let's just wait and see how many valid copy holders wind up in court because of their "wonderfull security"... sorry for the oxy-moron there...

I am glad Microsoft is looking out for My Security.. but I think their efforts are misguided. They need to focus their energy on fixing their buggy, crappy operating system which has more holes in it than swiss cheese first...

Good points there.. you had legit versions.. they had to issue new keys. First, why do you pay someone money, they brake your product and YOU have to spend the time, effort, and usually the pain, in fighting them for something you already did in good faith?

It's not just about the money. I usually get about 2 hours a day to myself.. me time... it's not going to be turned into "Microsoft and Me" time...

Is there any way to block/deactivate it without resorting to bloated software firewalls?

Block WGA from phoning home with the NTFS file system...

Set READ permissions only (remove execute) for the wgatray.exe and wgalogon.dll

Browse to %systemroot%\system32

Right mouse click on wgatray.exe, properties, security tab (simple file sharing must be disabled), advanced, uncheck inherent, copy, modify each user (including SYSTEM) to have READ permissions only (List Folder/Read Data, Read Attributes, Read Exteneded Attributes, and Read Permissions check boxes).

Do the same for wgalogon.dll

Never phones home because it cannot execute.
Tested and verified.

While some of you think MS has every right to snoop on people I say BS to that. I have legit MS software, however when I upgrade my own personal system only to have XP tell me that I need to call MS and report to them my activities, I have no intention to do such a thing which is why I go out and find a corporate edition with no cd keys. I refuse to be treated like a crook just because I did some upgrades to my own personal machine. It's what makes me laugh/sad at the same time. These companies are treating legit customers like crooks, well I refuse to jump through their hoops. They have my money and I want to further interaction with them, if i can do anything to prevent that I will.
