1 edit | [Packet8] BPG-510 Unlocked FW
Here is the whatever you want to call it FW for the BPG-510. Once again... said by anonymous :
1st: Unlike the previous unlocked versions, if you make g,711u priority 1, g.711a priority 2, g.729 priority 3, AND UNCHECK teh Checkbox next to g.729; Save it and REBOOT the adapter; THE G.711u CODEC WORKS ON ALL INCOMING AND OUTGOING CALLS. Not just the outgoing like the older unlocked versions.
Let's hope this doesn't crash the network -- There is no such thing as a stupid question, and yes, the camel types.

Both incoming and outgoing? Can someone explain to me how that can work? Thanks. |

| I'll take a stab at it. The normal Packet8 residential service defaults phone calls to the g.729 codec. Except for faxes which default to g.711. g.729 is a much more dependable codec compared to g.711. G.711 is technically better quality, but most people can't tell the difference, it doesn't play as well with jitter, and depending on the person's bandwidth availability it can be too much for your system. Plus, some people's phones, Vonage and others, actually sound worse using g.711.
Now, I've only had Packet8 for 8 months, but from what I've seen with the prior 2 "unlocked" (For lack of a better word) version of Packet8's firmware, while you could select g.711 as your number 1 choice codec, that only guaranteed that you could initiate a call using the g.711 codec. The default codec for incoming was g.729. That is what the checkbox next to the g.729 was for. Even if you unchecked it, changes don't apply until you reboot, and upon rebooting the box became rechecked. Somewhere in the firmware it must have had a signal to keep that codec selected for incoming. I don't know. Thus any incoming calls negoticated at the g.729 codec.
Now, supposedly on this newer version, when you uncheck the box next to g.729 it stays unchecked and therefor all negotiations are based on the order of your choices. i.e. If g.711u as your first choice then that is what it will negotiate at unless the other end can't then it works down the order. Doesn't matter if it's inbound or outbound calls.
Why the past versions couldn't do it both ways and the newest version can, I have no idea. I am definately not the guru of firmware. I'm just theorizing based off the last version and what anonymous wrote in the above paragraph. I could be wrong, but at least it sounded good. LOL!!! Later... Mike.... |

| You load this FW into your adapter. Download it Unzip it. Go to the admin page of your adapter and load it up. I forgot how to get your IP of your adapter but I'm sure someone will be along today to let you know. -- There is no such thing as a stupid question, and yes, the camel types.

| There's a lot of ways to get the IP address of your BPG510, but probably the easiest is to pick up the phone and say "COMPUTER, IP ADDRESS". ooops, sorry, that was a "Star Trek" Episode. Actually, just pick up the phone and dial 012-0003 . It will tell you the IP address and read back your phone number. Later... Mike... |

| I've got a BPG-510 and I updated it with the unlocked firmware code posted above. However, when I try to change the SIP server settings and click 'Save SIP Settings' the settings always revert back to the packet8 settings. I can make changes to other settings (lan, codec, etc.) but not the SIP server setting.
I have tried updating the firmware a second time with the same results. I'm trying to make this packet8 adapter work with viavoice. Thanks for the help. |

| This topic has also been discussed. Do NOT confuse "UNLOCKED FIRMWARE" with an "UNLOCKED ADAPTER" meaning able to use this adapter with any voip provider. That is not what the "UNLOCKED FIRMWARE" does.
The "UNLOCKED FIRMWARE" only opens up menus already in the firmware which allows you to change certain settings. These settings are usually "LOCKED" so the user can't change them. i.e. codec, fax/modem T.38 setting, etc...
In contrast, an "UNLOCKED ADAPTER" allows for the adapter to be capable of totally rewriting the settings to be used with any SIP provider. The packet8 firmware is setup to automatically default to theirs and only their servers. Big difference here.
Now, is it possible to "UNLOCK" the device to use it with a different VOIP service? Probably so. I don't know. I know there are 1,343,565 threads, plus or minus, talking about how to unlock the DTA310 packet8 adapter for use with other services. Probably even the BPA410, but I'm not sure. The 510 is relatively new, a few months, and probably hasn't been played with yet.
Anyway, that is the difference between an "UNLOCKED FIRMWARE" and an "UNLOCKED ADAPTER". Maybe someone who actually plays around with firmware and different adapters can chime in and shed more light on the topic. Later... Mike... |

| reply to christcorp Another way to find the IP address of a Packet8 endpoint is to pickup the phone, and press shortly the reset button on the back of the endpoint. The endpoint itself will spell the IP address. This is very useful when an IP address was assigned but for some reason the 0120003 IVR cannot be reached. -- Disclaimer: I work for 8x8. |
