| [northeast] NY, NJ & CT to get increased speeds effective 5/1
On May 1st in the NY, NJ, CT area (except for Orangeburg & Pearl River, NY) , the 5/2 tier will become 10/2 and the 15/2 tier will become 20/5. This increase is for both consumer and business customers. New customers getting service on or after 5/1 will get the new speeds. Existing customers will not be upgraded automatically and will need to call up and Verizon will honor the request to upgrade their speeds. |

Any good news for existing/future 30/5 customers? |
|
  FIOS-5-1
@verizon.net | No indication of any change to the 30/5 plan for either consumer or business customers.
It does seem to dilute the need for 30/5 even at the $55 price, let alone the $180. |

| reply to FIOS-5-1 I wonder I'd this is National or just specific to the Tri-State area? From other posts here, I would guess National or those areas heard about this and thought it was Nationally.
On the selfish side, woohoo!! |

| Hmm, I just had 15/2 w/ 5 static IP service installed last week and was clocking it at that speed until today. Now I am seeing a 30+ Mbps downstream. No change in the upstream though :-( ..
Did they rollout their increased speeds a few days early and at a higher rate than reported? |

GeekNJ Premium join:2000-09-23 Waldwick, NJ | I remote desktop'ed into my home machine and it's still the same 15/2. Not sure what speed test you ran, but from the report above, it seems that those already with service will need to call. |

| reply to GeekNJ dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-04-26 09:59:20 EST: 27069 / 1788 Your download speed : 27069 kbps or 3383.6 KB/sec. That is 688.2% better than an average user on verizon.net
Your upload speed : 1788 kbps or 223.5 KB/sec. That is 130.7% better than an average user on verizon.net
=====================================================
The above is pasted (one test is already saved) from a test done through dslreport on a nac.net server in Parsippany NJ ... If I go to speakeasy.net directly and run their tests from the NYC server I am now seeing over 40 Mbps! I also checked by downloading a 20 MB+ driver file from nVidia and it came in at 2.8 Mbytes/sec. Considering I don't know where that file originated or how much other traffic I encountered it still shows a marked increase over the 950 Kbytes/sec I got downloading the same exact file last week (and no it was not cached) ...
Indeed something is odd because my downstream is way above what it should be for my service but my upstream remains unchanged. Perhaps I should just stop looking a gift horse in the mouth?
EDIT: Okay, even more out of the ordinary! »/archive/verizon.net |

| reply to FIOS-5-1 "Official" as "official" gets before the actual date
I have a friend that works in Verizon in NYC that I contacted this morning and he received an "official" memo that this post sort of summarizes, with the changes outlined here represented in the memo.
So it looks to be good news for us lucky enough to get FIOS. -- Tweaked your connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

said by techman01 :I love competition with Cablevision : ) It's not really competition, just a front. Anyone can offer 15mbit service for free or 30mbit service for a premium, but how good is the actual service?

| From what i've read, the stated FiOS speeds are actual speeds for many if not most users, not targeted or max speeds. Check out the speed reports here. And I'm no Verizon fan - I had early Verizon DSL and it absolutely sucked. I've had FiOS since January. I check my speed consistantly (well I used to, I don't do it much anymore), but I have the 15/2 plan, and my speeds here on LI are always between 14.7x and 15.8x, and being in the 14mbps range is rarely, I'm normally around 15.8mbps.
And I check my speeds all the time, this isn't like "off-peak" hours, as where with Optimum Online the speeds constantly changing from 10 (my max was 11mbps) to 5, when your paying for 15. |
