Motorola HD DVR receiver

I'm looking at switching from Directv to Insight. I have a few questions about the provided HD DVR receiver. Is the unit stable (i.e. does it reboot randomly, miss recordings, have audio drop-outs when playing a recording, etc)? I switched from Directv to Dish Network about 2 years ago, and I was totally disappointed with their DVR units (522). The software was incredibly "buggy", and they were constantly pushing new software updates, sometimes fixing problems but introducing new bugs at the same time. After my one-year contract was up, I switched back to Directv since the DirecTivo DVR units are much more stable (and Directv had rolled out local channels in my area while I was with Dish).

The problem now is that I'm looking to upgrade to HD, but Directv has since abandoned Tivo (now using self-developed software), moved to an all-lease program (similar to cable and Dish), and charge a ridiculous price for their HD DVR units up front, like $400 or $500 (and this is for LEASED equipment).

So how are the Insight HD DVR units? Dual Tuner (watch 1 program while recording another or watch a recorded program while recording 2 live feeds)? Season Pass (Tivo) functionality - does it work right? Do these units tend to lock up any? Is there a buffer (like 1 hr or 30 minutes) that constantly records a program that is active even if it isn't set to record? And if these are dual tuner units, does the other (non-active) tuner keep a recording buffer when nothing is set/scheduled to record on that tuner.

Re: Motorola HD DVR receiver

Most of the information you want you can get from the Motorola website. Is the Insight unit "buggy"? Depends on your point of view and who you talk to. You can record two shows while watching a DVR program. You can't watch On Demand while two shows are tapping last time I checked. For that matter I need to check if you can use that while even recording one show. Used to be you could. Then a firmware update killed that. I've seen where the Motorola units Insight uses seem to have a memory issue. Similar to how when your running a computer that is doing to many things at once with not enough memory to handle all the task. This happens very frequently in my household. I think the recording buffer is 30 minutes on the unit. But don't quote me on that.

Please keep in mind many of these are older threads. Some issues they discuss may or may not have been resolved by now with new firmware. I'm just trying to give you a broad range of previous topics so you can do your own research and see other forum members opinions.
