The 5100a was only given out to SBC Customers in the 11 States they cover. It was not sold at retail and it was never used by any other ISPs. It is a "Bridge only" DSL Modem and with it's crippled firmware it cannot create a PPPoE session.
Funhouse info on the original 5100a Modem including how to get at line stats
There are no Firmwares available for the 5100a.

 | reply to Doctor Olds Doctor Olds,
I have read all of your posts on other threads about the Speedstream 5100a modem and so I am a bit confused as stated in this thread, my modem also the SpeedStream 5100 has no "a" anywhere listed on it and was also given to me from SBC before they became AT&T. I think if I recall correctly I got this modem on the pro plan (768kb-1.5mb down & 384kb up) around 2003 in the summer which later around late 2004 upgraded the plan to the latest current "pro" plan at that time which was 1.5-3.0mb down & up to 384kb up.
So anyways I have got a efficient 5100 SpeedStream modem and after turning it over I see this information:
Speedstream 5100 Ethernet ADSL Modem Efficient Networks
Part Number - 060-E41-A01
MAC # - 0020EAFD0457 HW # - 059-E141-A01
RATING: 12Vdc, 700mA
I am currently on the PPoE setup using a D-link 624M router on wireless Mimo 108mb connection and it works nice although occasionally my browsers wont display any web pages yet the connection is still "live" as I can do anything but browse the web, such as use remote desktop applications by windows which clearly uses the connection but this is a different story.
I want to know what the difference is between this 5100a and the 5100 version that I have despite both look exactly identical from a picture I saw in another thread.
I also would be very much interested on how to extract the firmware from my modem.
Thank You |

 | Here I found a picture of it.

 | Hi Again,
I checked the efficient company website and finally found the area where any official firmwares would be located at and I see none however I do see that the 5100 series offers web management but when I try the web url they say to use it doesnt work. I think its because Im already behind the router in PPoE mode. |

 | So this modem can handle the PPoE mode? let alone the 6mb downstream connection now offerd by sbc? |

| So this modem can handle the PPoE mode? let alone the 6mb downstream connection now offerd by sbc? It cannot handle the PPPoE. However, it should be able to handle the 6mb, provided that your line can handle it.
You would need to handle the PPPoE either on your computer or on a router. |

 | reply to NeedUrH3lpPlz Okay thanks for the information. One more question, how is the speedstream 4100 better than this modem? If the 4100 is not better then what modem would you recommend with use on SBC/ATT 3.0-6.0mb down & 384-608kb upstream connection and behind a router (D-link 624M series)?
thanks |

| If you have a marginal line (near the limiting distance from the telco facility, for example), then the 4100 will do better. It has a newer chip set that can better cope with marginal signals.
If your line is good, then it won't make a difference. Your D-link router should be able to handle the PPPoE. |
|
 | reply to NeedUrH3lpPlz Thanks for the response. Is there anything better than the 4100 series? |
|
 | reply to NeedUrH3lpPlz Sorry for the double post, but I forgot to ask where is the best place to get the 4100 series from, the ISP or a retail store? I know there have been discussion about how the ISP will place their own firmware blah blah.. |

| If you want the best price, and are willing to take a little risk, then try eBay. If you want it quickly, then Best Buy (and maybe Circuit City) have it with the SBC crippled firmware. I'm not sure where you can get an original version (full capability) but that will likely cost you more. Since you already have a router, there isn't any benefit that would justify the higher price.
As for alternatives, the Westell 6100 is probably just as good for handling marginal lines. The retail version or verizon version will include router capability. I'm not sure about the Bellsouth version. You should be able to get it for a decent price on eBay. |

 | reply to NeedUrH3lpPlz Alright thanks. Do you know if there is anything better than the 4100 series for use with SBC/ATT |
