What is it supposed to do?
Thanks |

| reply to gate1975mlm I couldn't get the registry entry to work for me here. However! You can just change it using the Group Policy Editor in XP Pro! (Sorry Home users, Home doesn't have the GPE)
Just bring up the GPE by running: gpedit.msc
Then you'll want to go to:
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer
The option you're looking for is:
Moving the menu bar above the navigation bar
Just enable that and you're all set! |

| reply to gate1975mlm Even with this registry setting you can't put "Back" and "Forward" buttons on the same line with "File | Edit | ..." menu in IE7 as I used to have in IE6?
Is it possible in IE7 or it's gone now? -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

...when I use the curser to "pull down" the toolbars at the top in full screen mode the menu is gone. |

said by mibrnsurg :All you have to do is right-click the gray area and click "Classic Menu" You can also "Add or Remove Commands..." there. I don't know if that is something that only works in the beta but heres how I got it to work on the final version. |

| reply to gate1975mlm Personally, after having played around with this for a couple hours, I'm getting used to not having the menu bar there at all.
IMHO, with the tabs, adding the menu bar takes up too much of the browsing window. Also, many of the things on the menu bar are replaced elsewhere, kind of making it repetitious. For example, notice that now the printer icon on the command bar has an arrow next to it that lets you do what the file/print..page setup etc. used to do on the menu instead of just printing the whole page. The tools icon on the command bar also replaces what the menu has and really, the only other thing I used to use the menu for was the favorites, which is accessible by clicking the star next to the tabs.
Once in a while I'd use the edit/search feature on the old menu bar but that wasn't a regular thing and probably doesn't need to be so accessible.
And, anytime u want the old menu, it's just a click away anyway.
I understand that we all get used to things a certain way and I think the first thing I was trying to do was drag the search bar down below the tabs and get the menu back. But this IS something new and worth considering how what I used to do can now be done another way and streamlined a bit.
The tabs are also going to take me some getting used to but they make a lot more sense than having windows all over the place as I would have before.
All in all I'm going to reserve my opinion and try it out for a while and just get used to it. But, I do think the menu bar will wind up being like a floppy disk drive for me, and something that I'll never really miss or use much anymore. -- The life you help save just might be your own Team Discovery |

| reply to gate1975mlm I'm not exactly sure if this was brought up before, or if this is even how it works for everyone (although I've tried to look through the thread), but have people noticed that by moving the menu bar to the other related bars, like links and possibly any other toolbars (like Yahoo! or Google) you might have installed also get moved to the top? They can still appear below the menu bar, depending on how you set things up yourself, but they will appear below the address bar that used to be at the top.
In IE 6, and most other browsers, people typically have the menu bar at the top, then the button bar with or without the address bar, then the address bar if it's not part of the button bar, and then have links and/or other toolbars. It seems a bit odd to have all those in the top section now above the button/address bar. I almost find it worse than not having the menu bar at the top.
In fact, as was mentioned by others, it seems that Microsoft has essentially put all the menu commands into the buttons that appear on the button bar that appears on the tab bar, in what seems to be an attempt to make the menu bar somewhat useless/obsolete since it would just do the same things. It appears that Vista overall seems to be designed with this in mind--perhaps this is the way Microsoft sees user interfaces and experience these days, and given the "popularity" of Windows it's possible that this might almost become a "standard" (with some time). |

| reply to gate1975mlm For those with XP Pro and the Group Policy editor, this earlier post by rci is worth another look.
It works great, is easily changed back, and includes some other options I never knew existed. »IE7 Tip for moving Classic Menu to top!
Although I must say, I have mine set up like Rick (also earlier in this thread), and I agree completely that without the menu bar at all, it is barely missed and makes for a cleaner look and more real estate. »IE7 Tip for moving Classic Menu to top!
Oh, and sorry to refer back to earlier posts in the same thread, but I felt they were both worth a second look. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

They are still accessible by using the >> icon which is there.
Another option appears to be if you right click the toolbar and select Customize Command Bar and then Add or Remove commands, you can pull some or all off.
