I think some of you are losing focus of the point the poster and early repliers were trying to make. They have nothing wrong with leasing/renting a STB. Its when they are expected to pay the equivalent of a 'blue sky' in order to be granted the permissing to lease/rent that is a message being received by comsumers.
For instance, let's say that a STB would retail outright on the B&M shelves for $1200. Also, let's say DirecTV is willing to lease/rent the STB for $10/month provided you pay them $200 up-front as the 'blue sky' palm-greasing agent. Well, I'd rather pay nothing up-front and simply pay $12/month to lease/rent.
But it is because the mandatory 'blue sky' requirement is being interpreted by the marketplace by the business as being questionable, and sometimes downright offensive. If someone is willing to lease a lesser of a STB for $10/month when it retail shelves for $1000, then why not $12/month for a $1200?
It just seems like DirecTV has trained its customers to expect one thing and now is changing it and at the same time acting all surprised the market place isn't as complacent as before. Give me sour milk and I'd cry, too. |
