| [motherboard] Dell Optiplex GX 200
Hello All,
I am trying to install Win Xp Pro on a friends computer Dell Optiplex GX 200 but it won't let me. I tried setting the boot order to cd rom first, floppy second and hard drive third. All it does is gets to the post screen where it says ( "alert" cover was previously off ) and then it says press F1 to try to reboot and press F2 to enter setup page. I am lost , Any help will be much appreciated.
TIA |

| reply to nightwind Boot into the BIOS and disable the "Chassis Intrusion Detection". If that doesn't work, try clearing the CMOS.
In the example picture below , you will see a plastic jumper shorting two pins. Unplug your pc. To clear the CMOS move the jumper to the open pin and the middle pin. Wait ~30 seconds then move it back to the original position. Plug your power supply back in and boot your pc.

| The jumper itself will look like one of the below pics. It is usually located close to the CMOS battery. If you can't locate it, that's ok. Just pull the CMOS battery and leave it out for ~30 minutes or so. Unplug your pc's power cable first though!

seqrets Premium join:2001-05-03 Nederland, TX clubs: | Try clearing the cmos again, close the case, boot the pc into the system bios "the chassis intrusion detection is enabled by default so don't boot right into windows" and set the chassis intrusion detection to Enabled-Silent or Disabled. |

| To the best of my knowledge, yes. Its basic design is to keep an unauthorized person from tampering with the system hardware. When set to Enable, if the chassis is opened the event is logged and on next boot the intrusion detection is displayed locking the workstation. |

| reply to nightwind Man, I am completely clueless! I have searched the www and through the Dell support forums for answers and I couldn't find anything definitive!
The only thing that I can possibly add is that the cmos battery is bad and it is not saving your new settings.
From what I gather, a bad CID switch won't cause the CID to alert. Changing the bios settings to Alert-Silent or Disabled should work. Resetting the CMOS should work with changing the bios settings!
If changing the cmos battery doesn't work, the only other thing that I can suggest is to post in the dell support forums and hope that someone there can help you out!
Here's the link that I used to search through Dell's Support Forum with the search string of chassis intrusion detection.

| In the boot order settings in the bios you have to make sure there is a check mark next to each device you want to boot or it wont boot from it even if it is listed
highlite each device with up/down arrows and press space bar to put a check next to the device you want to boot |
