Did you ask for their permission to use that?

I've already heard from E.L. Kersten's legal team demanding that I remove their trademark from my post.

Noone wanted the machine "at"?
The machine named "am" would make a perfect e-mail server for Nigerian bankers looking to give us money!

I'm a fan too, but the QA guys branched out some. One of the machines was called "enema".

Also, when the corporate IT idiots continued to show their profound lack of DNS knowledge by decreeing that the names for all the machines at our Santa Clara site would henceforth be prefixed with "sc" there was a mad rush for the name "rotum". A few stragglers settled for "rap".

I've used the following:

1. Type of big cats (tiger, ocelot, etc)
Ocelots aren't terribly big.

said by turbonium See Profile :

2. Elements (hydrogen, helium, etc)
3. Trees (elm, oak, pine)
Segue into a Monty Python theme with "The Larch".

said by turbonium See Profile :

4. Words that start with "g" and ends in "o" (go, goo, guano, etc)
5. Planets (and yes, uranus too)
"Where should I put this hard drive?"
"Stick it in Uranus"

Actually, that would be great for an outbound corporate mail relay. That way, every email that comes from your company has "stinkfist" in the headers.

I am a big fan of the greek mythology theme, but as mentioned above, it's a bit played at this point. I'm considering going with a new theme now -- Tool song names.
Yeah, I could almost see naming a mission-critical server "Stinkfist".

Misspelling Yttrium was a particularly nice touch
I knew that didn't look right when I typed it last night. Sure wish I'd have thought of misspelling it when naming those servers though!

Edit: Hmm, on second hand I think I might go with the elements instead. Song names use words that are too common, and there's always the risk of running out.

Personally, I use baseball terms. The laptop is 'gapper', desktop is 'slugger', when I ran a NAT/Firewall box it was 'pitcher', and the network domain/groupname is 'sandlot'.

one of my clients calls his servers by animals / bugs, like
beatles, tiger, etc.

we tend to name our own random things, like warrior, cerebrum, etc,

Why don't you go simple: DB1, DB2, etc. Easy to remember and you won't need thousands of names in hundreds of locations.

Use polyhedrons. "Can you check the drives on Great disnub dirhombidodecahedron?"

...at least that's what I would do.
LOL- once upon a time we named our systems after elements in the periodic table. There was a particularly annoying VP who brought in an application against our recommendation. His systems were promptly named yytrium, ytterbium and protactinium. Of course we had DNS aliases set to the elmental symbols so us admins didn't have to type all that. Never told the VP about those aliases though.
