Re: server naming convention advice

Places where I have worked we have used city names to lead it to a Row and then a number to the cage and another number for the blade/shelf on the rack.

Detroit12a Leads us to row D rack 12 top shelf great for troubleshooting routers to

Everybody does greek mythology. The ones that don't do star Trek or Lord of the Rings themes.

Having built a few clusters I'd have to recommend a mix of names.

For example...

The whole cluster could be named "Thor" , Admin nodes named hammer-N (where N = the node number, hammer-01, etc), Storage nodes could be called anvil-N, and compute nodes thunder-N or maybe lghtng-N, etc. You could then name your headnodes thor-N. Users would log into thor-01 or thor-02 and everyone can then communicate about nodes by name and you'll know exactly what they're talking about.

User: "Hey admin, my batch job died with an error about anvil-04"

Admin: "Ahh, something's wrong with a storage node.. or maybe somethings wrong with where you're trying to output data to"

Naming your nodes around some theme, but different enough to describe their general role, but still same enough that you can use simple numerics will save you a great deal of time and effort.

User: "Hey admin, my batch job died with an error about ralph"

Admin: "Hmmm... wtf does ralph do again?"

I named a four-node cluster after The Young Ones.
Nice. Not many fans out there.
My thoughts exactly - obscure but good choice!

try this, it works for us.

PKDACC01

P = Production (can use a T for test or D for development)
KD = Location (Kansas Data center in this case)
ACC = application name or abbreviation
01 = server number in application cluster

Works for us very well. We know exactly what type of server it is, where it is, what it does.
Works for us too.
FBCMOMWS135

FBS = First Baptist School
MO = Main Office
MWS = Mobile Works Station (laptop)
135 = office phone extension
and

FBCWCWS117

FBC = First Baptist Church
WC = Welcome Center
WS = Works Station (desktop)
117 = office phone extenstion 117

function-location-ordinal

SQL-STL-04

This was implemented to replace the old scheme which was

NTS APPL 45
NT Server Application 45th application server.

The old system was changed shortly after we rolled out Exchange, and began getting complaints about the NT SEXCHANGE server.

How can one resist?

"Jan", "Feb", "Mar", ...

"BeanCounter", "BeanCruncher", "BeanMachine", "BeanMultiplier", ...

"Deficit1", "Deficit2","Deficit3", ...

For tenet or ssh, name them using the fourth octet of statically assigned IPs:

"ACCT-111", "ACCT-112", "ACCT-113", ...

After all this great advice
We all are waiting now to hear what you picked

Perfect for an Exchange server, perhaps? =)

We got bought out by a big company that names all their machines with cryptic, alphabet-soup names like MPLDORA-1567829. I absolutely HATE that. I have no idea what that machine is or what it does. We name our servers after painters. This is especially handy when machines change roles. It's a lot easier to remember that Monet is the old production DB server that is now the QA DB server. With the cryptic schemes, you have to rename machines when they change roles. It also defeats the purpose of DNS. We wind up remembering the parent company's machines by IP address 'cause they're so much shorter than the host name.

Cutesy schemes can go wrong too, though. I worked in a place where the morale was a little low, especially in the QA dept. The machines in the QA lab had names like "despair", "regret", "apathy", "hindsight", etc.

I don't get it: what's wrong with those names?

I named the boxes in my lab at the office after knights of the round table. I also threw in Killer Rabbit and Holy Hand Grenade when I felt unusual.

I tend to use different themes for classes of servers. As has been mentioned before, function/purpose based naming schemes are not very practical when the server has multiple purposes or the named function gets moved to a different server.

Themes that I have used in the past (not always my ideas):
- Cartoon characters (Peanuts, Winnie the Pooh)
- Movie characters (James Bond, Starwars)
- Japanese Anime
- Flowers
- Stars
- Planets
- Subatomic/Quantum Particles
and many more I don't remember.

I'm currently using a multi-tier theme at work where continents are the site locations, countries within those continents are real servers and cities within those countries are virtual servers (were applicable).

I found that with cutsie names there are far less cases of mistaken identities. They are easier to remember and more distinct.

Given that most servers provide multiple functions a purpose based naming scheme still doesn't eliminate the need to maintain a database of server name and function mappings (unless of course there are so few servers that everybody can remember their functions).
