Why don't you go simple: DB1, DB2, etc. Easy to remember and you won't need thousands of names in hundreds of locations. |

Personally, I use baseball terms. The laptop is 'gapper', desktop is 'slugger', when I ran a NAT/Firewall box it was 'pitcher', and the network domain/groupname is 'sandlot'.

I am a big fan of the greek mythology theme, but as mentioned above, it's a bit played at this point. I'm considering going with a new theme now -- Tool song names.
Edit: Hmm, on second hand I think I might go with the elements instead. Song names use words that are too common, and there's always the risk of running out.

I've used the following:
1. Type of big cats (tiger, ocelot, etc)
2. Elements (hydrogen, helium, etc)
3. Trees (elm, oak, pine)
4. Words that start with "g" and ends in "o" (go, goo, guano, etc)
5. Planets (and yes, uranus too)
6. Colors (like shades of blue. Cerulean was my fav name)
My current company's new system is:
