What's the Point of Spinrite 6?

What is the purpose of Spinrite 6? It does not recover harddrives, nor any files. And with today's harddrive technology and the error recovery employed in HD, well the only time that the harddrive is unable to recover itself or via chkdsk is when the heads slam against the platters or when it's a hardware (motor) failure. So in reality what is the point of Spinrite 6? Can someone explain?

Exactly when there are errors on th HD. Spinrite is superior to chkdsk in file and hd recovery. if you are desperate for the data on the failing HD then you use spinrite or similar recovery util.

Spinrite is also used to text drives to make sure they are good. It is one of the most thourough testers I've seen.

I have personally never used Spinrite, and don't anticipate the need for it. However, I am aware of a number of people unable to use PGP's Whole Disk Encryption due to disk errors; with such errors not being resolved by Windows XP tools, and being subsequently resolved by use of Spinrite (and then being able to use the Whole Disk Encryption).

What do you mean by align drives? It does not defragment the drives nor change any file placement (unles there is unrecoverable error). I recall buying the software a while back but now looking back on it I am seeing it so far as a useless purchase. Any failure I had that I could not recover via chkdsk was a total head ramming against the platers failure (with the familiar click click click sound) or a total motor failure.
And no, Spinrite could not recover the "click click click" Failure.
I mean most of the times when my HD totally falied, even BIOS could not ID them so there was no use to run any utility since their presence was transparent to the system.

My answer was in a category that is colloquially referred to as 'joke'.

If you search with google, I'm sure you can find an explanation of the concept.

Also many times when I runned spinrite on a failinig drive (on level 5) it took anywhere from 5 hours to over a day to complete and during those times the drive is subjected to continuous use, as a result I was always worried that whatever failures our occuring, by useing spinrite they might be ampliffied (failures being hardware/motor failure).

I can't attest to spinrite 6, but i have version 5 that saved a couple drives from the dustbin.

One was a 12G drive that somehow had the foil seal on the sides scraped off by a messy drive bay..oops. Major dust contamination bummer. I resealed it, but the damage was done.

It was unusable for windows and chkdsk/scandisk couldn't fix it. It's now stable enough for *nix, although win32 still balks at the existing bad clusters that can't be fixed.

It's a good tool IMO, but it's not gonna fix everything.
