Looking at some of the the facts, it's even bigger than I initially thought: "At least 500 million people are infected each year in the world, resulting in more than a million deaths [...]" 500 million people.. that's about 6-7% of the total world population... every year! Next to of course all the tragic deaths, it also is an heavy economical burden on many countries : "Malaria has been estimated to cost Africa more than $US 12 billion every year in lost GDP." Using BOINC, the number of computers below working on research could easily be increased by a great amount: "The Swiss Tropical Institute has developed a computer model for malaria epidemiology and harnessed its in-house PC capacity, about 40 machines, to do preliminary studies. " I'm certainly going to attach this project to my BOINC client when new accounts can be created.

Before reading this on the project's website, I would never have expected so find a number that high! I really hope that this project can make a useful contribution and I'm looking forward to the moment when account creation will be enabled again.
