Should I upgrade to the 2700HG-B?

I currently have the 1800HG and am thinking of upgrading my service from pro to elite. Last time I upgraded they gave me the modem offer, so I assume that I'll get it again.

Therefore, should I upgrade from the 1800HG to the 2700HG-B (assuming this is the current one offered by ATT in CA)? What are the benefits of the 2700HG-B? and why should I upgrade?

There is no NEED to change modems. The 2700HG has an ASL2+ modem but ATT doesn't offer ADSL2 service yet (I dont think anyone does).

The 2700HG is cooler looking...

Actually, now that I think about it, I'd wait on the 2700HG until 2wire works the bugs out of it's latest firmware. It has some firewall issues that weren't present in older models.

Could you give more information about what are the bugs of the latest firmware?
I was using that gateway and I want be prepared.

I would suggest to bbear get the new modem because will be more predictable that 2Wire will upgrade that hardware than the venerable 1800HG in the future. If not like it you can sell it, ATT is giving $50 rebate with the purchase of the modem.

»Actiontec works better then 2wire for us

»How do I downgrade my firmware?

Just to be clear this is NOT an issue with "excessive sessions"

Personally, I've noticed that it blocks traffic for lesser used ports (pop3, IMAP, NNTP ports work no prob) even if you create a pinhole for a particular port, traffic still won't pass and DMZ mode doesn't seem to fix the issue. I've noticed it for Messenger, IRC and P2P software especially and everytime it happened I reset the thing to factory state and it works for a week or so (I think it depends on how much I use a particular application).

I am actually using my old 1000SW with no problems now and I'm going to wait for a firmware update.

FYI I read on the 2Wire site that the 1800HG is ADSL2 ready. My interpretation of that is the will upgrade the firmware at some point and it will be able to do ADSL2.

If this is so, then back to my original question. What's the difference between the 1800HG and the 2700HG-B besides the form factor?

functionally, both the 1800HG and the 2700HG-B are identical, other that 2 small hardware things, no HPNA or USB on the 2700HG-B.

The 2700HG-B also has the Atheros wireless, the 1800HG has the TI chipset. They both do 802.11g and 400mw of power.

For software, they both can run the newest releases of firmware, 4.25.19, and with the 4.x firmware can support ADSL2+. As for firewall issues, i've not had any issues with my firewall involving port-forwarding, as i've hosted FTP/SSH servers on my PC and even opened a custom port to forward (and redirect) an odd port number to port 80 on my TiVo, which is hacked and running TiVoWeb.

I also know that DMZ was working, as I had to use it when i configured a friend's non-dsl homeportal behind my homeportal. i put it in DMZ mode to allow the traffic to pass through to the configuration server, which is required for getting the proper wireless settings in the box.

I'm on a 2700HG right now, running Trillian with no issues (ftp transfers too) and occasional uses of Azureus.. never touched the firewall. Even games people say have issues, like Battlefield 2 work just fine.
