| WEP to WPA not working-please help
Hello All,
First, thanks, in advance, for taking the time to help.
I have a Dlink DI-524 Wireless Router and Just received my Dell Inspiron 710m yestureday. The problem is that the Dell will connect wirelessly using the following set-up:
ROUTER-- SSID: Router1 Channel: Auto Mode: Mixmode SSID Broadcast: Enabled Security: WEP Authentication: Open WEP Encryption: 64 Bit Key Type: Hex Key 1-4: 0000000000
Dell Inspiron-- Intel 2915ABG Wireless Network SSID: Router1 Operating Mode: Infrastructure Network Authentication: Open Data Encryption: WEP Password Encryption Level: 64 Bit Key Index: 1
But NOT with this set-up:
Router-- Security: WPA PSK/EAP: PSK Passphrase:******** **all settings above "security" match the working set-up
Dell-- Network Authentication: WPA-Personal Data Encryption: WEP Wireless Security Password: ******** **password & passphrase match
This is killing me. A few more points of interest: Plug the Dell into the Router with an RJ45 it works great. I updated the Intel Driver The available settings for the Dell "network Authentication:" field = Open, shared, WPA personal, WPA2 Personal. Where the only choices for the router (which I am accessing from my PC are Open or Shared.
It is as though the manufacturers can't agree on what selections to specify for each field (standards...where are they?)
I hope that I gave enough info.
Thanks again all!!!! |

| reply to AF10 Thanks for the input. The page that your reply sent me to is not the most current firmware for the DI-524 and is incompatible ( according to the router error message). I have already upgraded to the most recent firmware version.
My problem appears to be a setting somewhere that I am neglecting or am unaware of. Any thoughts on how to find it or fix this problem?
When I select the router from the wireless networks available I get "unable to connect to Router1". I am sitting right next to the blasted thing and the signal meter is pegged. |

WPA does not include WEP, only TKIP (and later on some models, AES). You need to use WPA PSK-TKIP or some variant of those acronyms on your Dell. If you're WEPin', you're not WPAin'. |

| Great! Now the Intel tray icon on the Dell says that I am connected to the router. However, the other system tray icon says that I have "limited or no connectivity" and no access to the internet.
When I check the "support" tab it says that "You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occured because the network did not asign a network address to the computer."
under details it lists the MAC address and the: IP: 169.254.171.45 SUBnet: 255.255.0.0 With no default gateway, DNS or WINNS server.
I tried restarting the Dell and that...stand by...now says "acquiring network address" and then switch back to "limited or no connectivity".
Making progress but still no go...What do you think??? |

| It seems to be working now. I manually asigned an IP, sub, default gateway in the same range as the desktop (101 as opposed to 100).
Thanks for the help guys! I swear, why can't each piece of hardware have the same fields, drop down menus and selection options? That would make things much easier. But then again if the hardware manufactures could do that we wouldn't have to deal with the whole Blue-ray v. HDDVD issue would we. What would be the fun in all of that? Well I'll save that discussion for another forum.....thanks again ALL.
