| How much did you pay for your 1st computer?
I paid US$1,980.00 for a 25mhz computer with 10mb hard drive. It didn't even include a modem. I paid US$19.99/month for a dial-up account and porn at that time was only software/pictures hahaha. This was in 1993. I started building my own around 1997. The motherboard cost me US$150.00, a 32mb memory cost me $169.00 and a 4gig WD hard drive cost me $270.00. Now you can get a 500gig hard drive for much less than that. Back then nothing was intergrated with the motherboard. Not sound, not NIC, nothing.
So how much did it set you back for your first computer? |

| reply to dick3248 RM3,600.00 to RM5,500.00 for a pc? wow that's expensive though cheap(in terms of us$} compared to mine. How many in the rural area can afford that? I probably could not have afford one had it not been for the 12 month no interest deal offered by the retailer.
what do you all use your pc for? |

| Mine was really late: RM7k Dell Dimension XPS-T (1999) loaded up to the Yazoo (at that time). P-III Katmai, 'humongous' 128MB RAM, 'fastest' 4x Sony CD-RW, Diamond TNT-Riva AGP, Turtle Beach Montegro II sound card, Altec Lansing ADA-885 (5.1 THX/AC3, Dolby Digital, 140W RMS) speakers. Had 'fastest' 7200rpm WDC Caviar HDD. And, 19" CRT monitor!
Later upgraded to 512MB RAM, added another 7200 rpm WDC Caviar HDD. Swapped to 40x Sony CD-RW, later to LiteOn 4x DVD-RW, and more recently, Pioneer DVR-A08XL 16x DVDRW, and currently, Pioneer DVR-110 16x DVDRW. LOL!
Still alive today!!! Altho currently switched off as I'm playing with a 'faster' Dell Dimension 800MHz unit. LOL! Pioneer DVR-110 16x stolen fr ancient PC to this 'newer' unit. You shd see it trying to burn an 8x DVDR. heh heh.
Was provided with RM10k+ notebooks before this, so started 'owning' one v late in life. LOL! I thot paying RM7k for a PC then was decent until told otherwise, and that I need to go get my head checked! But amazingly, nothing died on me (except MS mouse) until today - touch wood.
Waiting for Dell to throw out a Conroe box for me to get my second PC. LOL!

| reply to dick3248 about 1200 US dollars in 1998/9. It was a pentium 2 400mhz. with 128 Ram and a 15GB hard disk.
The video card was voodoo 3 16mb. 3dfx was huge back then.
Sound blaster was the preferred sound card. Also we got with it a 17 inch trinitron Sony Monitor.. Which was considered the top of the line before the introduction of flat screen monitors a year later.

| Can you believe the specs of pc these days compared to the past? I mean you could fit an entire pc in terms of diskspace from a pc 10 years ago into a USB thumbdrive!
