I'm certainly not saying it won't be so, but I find these prices a little hard to believe.

How much will it drive up the cost of the average new computer? If those prices are correct (which I doubt) then the average price of a new computer would go up by $150+

Sorry, but thats just BS! there's no way it will cost that much! I think it might be even cheaper than XP was...why?...because you can pick-up a copy of OSX "tiger" for $129, and the fact that Office has always been Microsoft's cash cow not Windows!
Ha you go to that link now,and it tells you that the post was pulled due to "Public Flamming".

mmmmmm....I don't think so:

Protected: Final Prices for All Vista Editions? Post pulled due to public flaming.

I think it best to wait for the prices directly from MS.

I had heard, prior to this, that Microsoft was actually seriously considering having Windows Vista cost less, maybe even significantly less, than XP in an attempt to shore up Windows. Again, that was hearsay, but it made more sense than this would.

I've said this before, but this looks like the right place to say it again.

If OSX can be had in a 5 machine license, why can not Windows be had like this?

Apple had $200 for up to 5 computers. This makes perfect sense.

If MS did that, they'd virtually eliminate the "casual" pirate IMO. Sell it to the families with 2+ computers who wish to upgrade to the Vista "basic." Sell it to the geeks as the "Ultimate" for their little LAN's.

If Ultimate is as much as the 1st poster says, that is just outrageous.

If that were the price for a 5 pc license, MAYBE it'd make a slight bit more sense. I think MS would make a killing on selling a multi-pc license while still sustaining the single pc and sitewide sales just fine.

Makes ZERO sense to NOT sell their OS in this way.

Having a stupid number of Vista versions means diddly to me if they can't pull their collective heads out into the real world and see just why there are so many that failed that (pointless?) wga update. I would almost be willing to bet on HALF of those people already paid for the real thing at some point. If MS had this deal for 3-5 PC's, and THEN tried their piracy check, the numbers (in the U.S.A anyway) would me much smaller.

Seriously, ~$50 more bucks for a multi-pc deal, I would go for this. I bet lots of other people would to. So why not? It's not like they'd LOSE money on this! As many have said, MOST people get the OS WITH THEIR COMPUTER!!! A few UPGRADE, and hey, there's another cash cow, a multi UPGRADE deal that's slightly less than the full thing, but more than a single upgrade...

Confusing licenses? Not really, just plain dumb. I think Apple's is much more realistic, and it's worded in plain english... no I'm not a fanboy, I just happened to read their deal on the OSX page while I was waiting on a quicktime download..

It's silly to pay so much money again and again for the same household's computers, yet here we are, every pc comes with it, which is nice, but what about the geeks??? If MS wants to give some real incentive to buy their OS, this would be one of the best ways IMHO.
Got an old box that still runs 98 just fine that I'd love to try Vista on (min. specs, but it'd probably work!).

If there was any credence to this, it would be all over the press within minutes. Until Microsoft provides the pricing information any suggestion about price is strictly rumor.

Well i am sure they won't release prices until later on this year. I won't be upgrading anytime soon at home or at my job..

Here something to think, how much was Windows XP Home and Pro when the first came out? I seem to remember them being pretty close those prices; it's only now after there is a lot of them in circulation that the price is come down quite a bit.

I can't remember how much XP Pro Corp goes/went for, but $1,000 for Enterprise which may consist of 25+ licenses isn't bad.

What will always irk me is that MS must sell XP Home to Dell for some ridiculously low volume price. I can get an entire box from Dell for around $300 that includes the OS. Yet I can't buy the OS from MS for much less than $99.

I don't see why I should be screwed or punished, paying probalby triple what Dell does, just because I want to build my own hardware.

Buy in bulk and they will cut you crazy deals too.

You sound like the small retailer complaining that Wal Mart gets better prices from distributors than you do. OF COURSE THEY DO . . . they are buying 1,000,000x what you are.

Why buy and operating system like xp when you get a good cracked copy then when vista comes out buy it cus we all know the cracks are gonna suck and you will feel good cus you supported them and bought there stuff and once you get that valid key you wont have to worry about the cracks problem solved.

Think faster, cooler, and cheaper... Think APPLE!

It had to be said. Microsoft has been trying to copy the look & feel of Apple for so long, that in truth if you like how windows has been going to windows vista, you'll like the feel of a MAC.

And as people have already said, it's cheaper to install and upgrade. Also Apple is now allowing (slowly) 3rd party hardware and it's already Intel. Buying a MAC you can even run Windows if you wish. Making the switch has never been so easy.
