My idea of the prices (in CDN).

Windows Vista Home Basic - $99.99
Windows Vista Home Premium - $149.99
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition - $199.99
Windows Vista Business - $249.99
Windows Vista Enterprise - $299.99
This is more reasonable. I'd purchase the Ultimate at that price. (USA $ of course)

I would go for the ultimate edition at that price only if it came with the new office 2007, which is something I heard talked about. If not, paying over 600 for a single license OS sounds ridiculous, and maybe it's just me, but I would bet the basic edition comes in at under $150.00, Premium around $250.00, ultimate around $400.

Any talk on pricing at this stage is merely a test to feel out the market. Any leaked price points at this point will always be high, that way when they announce a true price it will not seem as bad.

That being said, if they want most people to switch, and want to hold their huge base, I would go back to a tactic they used in the beginning.

I would price it like this.
Starter 29.95 For emerging markets
Basic 79.95
Premium 149.95
Ultimate 324.95 (Include an additional license for premium)
Business 249.95 Linux in the small business area is gaining.
Enterprise 799.95

This will never happen, but if they really want to take a bite out of piracy, and keep Linux out of the minds of most people, this would work. I'm confident in the short and long term depending on functionality, lower price points across the board would increase sales dramatically and increase other auxiliary products. Profits would be at the very least the same, most likely higher.

Hook em with basic, and people will eventually upgrade to premium online directly, which they could charge $80 and take the whole amount.
