You cannot watch videos at Launch. They use an ActiveX control. I cannot watch them in Windows with Firefox.

Apparently, it is possible:
»forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic···t=206217
»zeo.unic.net.my/2005/07/31/acces···firefox/ , »www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/

The first method uses the ActiveX plugin for Firefox, which I believe requires Wine. Or at least I once had Wine install that plugin for me when I was trying to make another application that needed IE6 libraries work. I've long since removed the plugin and the application, though, so I don't know if, for example, a windows version of Firefox would be needed to run the ActiveX plugin.

The second method, using the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox, seems more promising to me. It's what I would try if I really wanted to see those videos. Note that MPlayer with win32 codec support and mplayerplug-in both need to be installed first - the Greasemonkey script just enables Firefox to use MPlayer through the plugin at Launch. So first you'd want to install MPlayer and make sure it will play wmv video files, and then you could try installing Greasemonkey and the script for Launch.com.

Crossover Office by Codeweavers would allow this.

yeah when I install java mandriva it installs fine but doesn't put any links to the binaries in the $path or whatever. What I did was add the /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/bin to the path in the .bash_profile.

Also, to get java to work in firefox you need to copy the libjavaplugin_oji.so to your mozilla plugins dirrectory, probably from /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7 to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Or you could just install the rpm and do it the easy way.

Nope, it's free. There are some other nice rpms on that MCNL site too.

The Mandriva Official Club site is the one that isn't free. (I belong, and think the time savings and tested rpms are worth it, but the stuff is available free out there if you want to build it yourself or scrounge up an rpm.)

I don't know of a video about installing software. If you've got a quality tested rpm and all of the urpmi sources installed it is pretty much click and go. There is so much stuff in the Mandriva contribs repository free that you mostly can find anything you want in an rpm. And with the urpmi sources set up as I mentioned earlier, all of the dependencies get automatically resolved.

Are you still fighting with Java?

You're doing it the hard way. If you grabbed Sun's package, install as was mentioned... then move the plugin over, and point your browser to the installation's java executable. Or... just grab the rpm.

Once you get the urpmi sources installed (remember to update them from time to time from the Mandriva Control Center's update button, so you'll see any new stuff uploaded) you can use the MCC's "add software" applet to search for other apps to install. There are untold thousands of them.

SUSE is a great distro. be sure to grab the addon cd along with the install cd's. you can then install java, flash and some other programs right along with the original install. no brainer, i like that 8)

I was browsing that site and it seems they have a lot of stuff not in the normal easyurpmi mirrors and such. Is there a way I can add all of that to urpmi?

See man urpmi.addmedia
urpmi.addmedia [options] <name> http://<login>:<pass>@<host>/<path>
[with <relative path of synthesis|hdlist>]
Where <name> is your reference for the medium (e.g. "updates").
<name> is optional if --distrib is given in options.
<host>/<path> is the location of the media directory on the net
(e.g. media/main).
<relative path of hdlist> is the pathname where to find the
hdlist of the rpms. The location is given relative to <path>.
curl is used by default to download files, wget may be used if
curl is not installed or --curl is given in options.
eg: urpmi.addmedia http http://jpackage.sf.net/rpm/free with
hdlist.cz
Assuming the rpms that fit your installation are at http://mandrivaclub.nl/sources/official/2006/i586/
you would note this directory has an hdlist.cz file included as well as the smaller synthesis.hdlist.cz, which contains less information about the packages to view in rpmdrake or urpmq -i and is useful for low bandwidth connections. Mandriva mirrors and install sources have these files in a media_info subdirectory of the media directory, atm.

In this case,
# urpmi.addmedia nl_club http://mandrivaclub.nl/sources/official/2006/i586/ with hdlist.cz
would add that source.

If you have a local directory of rpms you want to add as a urpmi source, you could make local hdlist/synthesis.hdlist files with genhdlist run in the rpms directory.
  genhdlist -h
Usage: /usr/bin/genhdlist [options] [dir...]
Options:
--help print this message and exit
--headersdir dir put temporary files in dir
--dest build index from this dir
-s silent mode
--nobadrpm do not stop on bad rpm
--noclean keep cache files
--suffix SUFFIX put a suffix on hdlist names
