| [Wireless] Connected but not connected (weird I know)
Here's the situation. I come home from college to visit and stay for a bit so I bring my pc with me and since it's going to be in my room I invest in a wmp54g card. The router has been setup by myself last year and has had wireless disabled since they didn't need it. I come home and enable wireless and instead of using security such as WEP or WPA I just go with MAC filtering. Seems to work just fine for the first day but after that I get repeated dropped connections and now even though it says I'm connected I can't seem to do anything related with the internet such as browsing sites or even getting to the router setup.
I've invested in some high gain antennas for the router but that doesn't help at all. This didn't surprise me much since I had excellent range but still couldn't do anything with the internet. I'm very frustrated when I browse a site and it does not load up only to find my internet is dead butthe balloon tip still says I'm connected. I go to repair the wireless connection and it fails. After that it tries to acquire an ip address from the router and seems to get it because the balloon tip pops up and says I'm connected with an excellent signal. However, I still can't get on the internet.
It seems to be hit or miss in my case because I'm always "connected" but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I just installed the Linksys monitor software and here's a screenshot. Is there anything wrong with ehse numbers?
One last thing, how can I tell which version of the card (wmp54g) do I have? All I see on the box is the serial number and the mac address. I know I have either a v3 or a v3.1 wrt54g but don't know the card version.
Sorry for the long post but this is very frustrating and I need some help to get this to work correctly. Oh yea, I'm sure it's on the wireless end since there are two PCs connected through the ethernet ports on the router and they are cruising along fine on the internet while I'm struggling. Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.
edit: ahhh it happened again while I tried to submit this post, luckily I copied it just in case. AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! |

| I have two Linksys USB adapters that do the same thing. I found in the fine print that the security (WEP in my case) only works with other Linksys equipment. My router is a Westell; everything else on the network works fine. I have to disable security altogether. One of my computers must also have the SSID broadcast disabled at the router before it will connect to the Internet; wireless network connects OK as yours does. Hope this helps! |
