Questions about reconnecting to ELN DSL service »

Farewell

My Earthlink DSL line will be turned off on the 28th of May after a little over one year. It came down to price and price alone. I had no real problems with my Earthlink (provisioned by Qwest) DSL.

As I was canceling the account today the ELNK CSR said that he could match Qwest's price, which was different from what I'd been told when I talked to an ELNK CSR a month ago. I couldn't be without DSL and so had Qwest provision my new DSL service on a 2nd phone line.

Anyway, the QWest DSL is up and running so I'll use it for the next 12 months at $26 a month (about half of the ELNK cost) and see who's running a special when that contract expires. I may be back.

I want to thank everyone on this forum that answered my questions this last year, especially Doc and BILL_MI. The technical help available here is excellent.

Technically correct. If you were still "under contract" a month ago when you called, they simply cannot price-match you at that time. You have to call the day the contract expires or the day after. Your contract has to be over in the system before they can price-match you.

Good luck with your Qwest service.

Thanks for the kind words and good luck on the new service.

I'm in the same boat. Higher price is no longer worth dwindling services. I'll follow shortly and you're lucky to have a second line because coordinating the change looks like an exercise in precision guess-timing.

After 3 years of dial up and then 2 w/DSL service Earthlink turned into a joke. They sold me DSL 3.0 and then after a long period of time because I was not smart enough to know about how to test my speed like here at this site I discovered I was getting something like 290mps!! I thought, oh, DSL is faster than dial up but not that much faster, DUH! Anyway after going through a merry go round with on average 3-6 people every time I called Earthlink about 6 hours on the phone in total on 5 calls to figure what was up they finally agree to send a Covad tech over. He proceeds to tell me that no way I should have ever gotten or paid for not only 3.0 but ANY DSL service as I am too far 18,000 feet from the source. Earthlink says it's not their fault and if I would like my dial up back fine they'll give me a few free months otherwise if I don't like it I can cancel. I call another DSL provider Sonic on the same phone line and they claim no problem we can give you 1.5 because they don't use Covad and have a relay 2,000 feet from me. Long story short I am getting proper speed now for my buck and oh yeah I am paying 25.00 less per month for a year. Earthlink never asked or showed me how to check my speeds and Sonic brought that up immediately. Most people I know never heard of Broadband Reports. Live and learn is the message..

There must be a couple hundred or more places on the Internet that tell you about checking your speeds.

True Dr. Olds, but if you don't know to look you will never find them. Most people get DSL, it feels faster so they think all is OK. They simply don't know to check to see if they are getting what they paid for.

Yes my point exactly. For people like yourself it must seem amazing that someone could not know this, but when you venture outside the realm of a site like this and the other "couple hundred" you might be surprised.
