I'd love it if they decided to go with FTTH. I'd sign up as soon as available. It would be a future proof connection. |

1 edit | reply to brooklynman4 I'd say they are more than just friends.
Verizon proved the concept. SBCatt is doing it's usual follow-the-leader dance. Since they don't compete with each other, wouldn't it be nice if they banded together to drive the cost of FTTH/P down enough to make it viable for general overbuilding? Now that would finally bring real competition head-on with cable, and the myth of "consumer choice" might actually move to the reality-based world.
By the way, SBCatt has been quietly installing FTTH to new developments for awhile now. If true, this is really just an expansion of that.

How about this slogan, ""ONE POLICY, ONE SYSTEM, UNIVERSAL SERVICE"? The holding company would be AT&T and the system could be called, "The Bell System" after Bell the inventor of the telephone. It's logo could be a bell, brilliant. |

| reply to rg6 Well, it's abundantly clear that fiber is the future. I think AT&T was fooling themselves thinking light speed could deliver the bandwidth needed for today's and tomorrow's bandwidth hungry uses. To dump billions into what really amounts to nothing more than a stopgap measure would be foolish.
The plus side, if AT&T decides to go the FTTH route, it will give some validation to Verizon's Fios deployment, keeping the stockholders there at bay.
The existing copper plant nationwide is pretty much obsolete. DSL is/was a stopgap measure until FTTH could be rolled out.
It's fun living in the future, isn't it boys and girls??? |

| reply to rg6 The plan on running fiber to the house where it is new build. They are already doing this in certain areas of San Diego. It would be to costly in certain areas to do all fiber so they are most likely going to run both their version of FIOS and their project lightspeed.... |

Tiny little countries with government subsidies. Look at this map. The North East serves more subscribers then those tiny places. If the govern would get there greedy franchise hands off fiber it will take off. |

| reply to rg6 What the real shame of this talk about At&t's IPTV and such is that older neighborhoods aren't going to get it. Only new subdivisions, which in my opinion is BS. Why is that? I'm interested it what they offer since my only option is crappy Charter Cable or Direct TV. There are a lot more older neighborhoods than new that have people wanting that kind of service. Bring it to us, and we shall use it. If not, then we don't want you business anyway. |

They (ATT, etc.) can change their names every week all they want... but they are the worse excuse for a telecom no matter what the name. -- Mom was right...I need more FIBER> |
