Remote Control a PC over a LAN?

Is there any free software that I can remote control a pc over a LAN. Because I have my grandpa networked to my house and he is about 200 yards away and I would like to be able to work on his computer remotely because it tends to get messed up frequently lol and I don't want to haft to go down there everytime it messes up. I am currently using LogMeIn but I wish there was a solution similar to that which goes over LAN. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are tons of software (Free) that does this. One of them is UltraVNC I use it, my other PC is in another room. What can I say I'm lazy.

If your grandpa has Windows XP Professional installed, why not use the native Remote Desktop Terminal Services?

I use Real VNC and it does what you need it to do.

Ok so does this work where I can access his computer any time it is on without any input from him? Because lets just say its hard to instruct him to do anything on a computer because he is not the most computer literate person in the world lol.

·WOW Internet and C..

Yes. With Real VNC, during install leave the options from making that pc(his) be the server and let it run as a service. It will always be running. You can then password protect it so that nobody but you can take control of the machine. You can take over his machine whenever you want. He could be surfing and you could move the mouse on him and freak him out.

Yes, with any VNC product, you just specify the internal host (computer name) or ip address of the computer you are attempting to access, and it will go through your LAN rather than the Internet.

UltraVNC is the best. One thing I like about it over the other flavors of VNC is that you can transfer files with it. Make you install the video drivers or it will be slower than other versions.

Well I already got Real VNC installed and it seems to work alright. The only problem I have is my Kerio Personal Firewall is blocking it and I haft to disable it. Does anyone know how to make Kerio allow it?

Edit: Im going to give Ultra a try though.

The server needs to listen on TCP 5900, and it will get a connection from some random port in the 1024-5000 range on the controlling computer. If your running dhcp you might want to use a range like 192.168.100.1-192.160.100.X(or whatever the range used on your lan is) if the ip addresses of your lan computers change, otherwise static can be set to one address.

The controlling computer is very similar, however switch the ports, the controller will initiate from random port on the 1024-5000 range to 5900 on the server.

I'm attaching an example of the controller config, but this one is on a static configuration, I also have the icmp rule setup so I can ping the other computer to make sure its up.

If you understood how to properly configure your firewall this would be easy as you would have been prompted, or if your rules are too restrictive these blocked communications would be in your logs.

I suggest you start a new thread in the Kerio forum if you need more assistance., making sure to provide at least the version you are using, and try to provide as much information as possible.

BTW, make sure you password protect the server, even if its only on your lan.

If he has Windows XP Pro, I also recommend Remote Desktop, possibly with the multiple user hack.

he said he wanted limited involvement for his father, with xp you can request help and share the desktop through email or im. Yes he could go in remotely and override without involvement. VNC will let him login or see his desktop if he is doing something, better than windows rpc.
