What is OT and what is a "stupid" question

said by jdmarti1 See Profile :

The fact that these guys didn't kill me for showing my stupidity is amazing. I read this forum from front to back - and then started asking lots of questions.
Sorry to start this topic, but I just wanted to say that every one of us here on this forum picked up a radio AND a computer for the first time at some point in our life and looked at with a stupid face. I remember when I first found this forum. I read everything too(Wasn't lot of content back then ), but it didn't take long, so I started that thread of mine. There really is no such thing as a stupid question. The only thing that burns my a$$ is when someone asks us to basically just do the work for them, and hold their hand through starting a WISP. When ever someone posts a question, and I know that the answer is sometimes elusive, or the answers You can find are confusing, I post immediately to be helpful. Even if it is a simple question, I answer because that's what people did for me. The topics here are very wide ranging, and being a WISP isn't just about radios and RF. You have to wear many shirts, and below is a short list:
1. Accountant
2. Book keeper
3. physcologist(Dealing with the wife, family and kids AND customers)
4.Roofer
5. Tower climber
6. Computer repair person
7. Support desk technician
8. RF guru
9. Concrete worker
10. Systems administrator
11. Networking guru
12. Structural engineer
13. Human resources manager
14. Advertising and PR manager
15. Arborist (Tree trimmer)
16. Purchasing manager
17. Lease management specialist
18. Inventory control specialist
19. Projected earnings and expansion planner
20. Last, but not least: TOP DOG. Every single question or problem that anyone faces in Your business will come across Your desk, and You have to have an answer that is correct. If not, Your business may suffer. While some of us may be good at delegating authority, even the people You trust to make a correct decision will come to You once and awhile.

I made this post because I wanted to clear up what is and isn't off topic in this forum. As You can see, the list is pretty broad, so You would really have to go out of Your way to go off topic in here. Even if You and Your spouse are fighting because of all the hours You work?, post it!. It really is on topic, and maybe one of us have been through it and have an answer that made our spouse happy 2 months ago??, You never ever know?

This is very good of you to say superdog1! You and many others here are very helpful and clearly know lots of what the rest of us want to learn. But I for one am still concerned about testing your (and others) patience. Especially when it is a topic that has been beat to death in previous posts. I do a lot of searches and find that I can't find the appropriate search phrase to get the info I want. I found a site once where a list of the top 50 searches was kept in a list. I could go through the list and was easily able to find the appropriate phrase for my search. The list was all hyperlinks so I would just click and voila there was the juice I was looking for. The saavy posters learned to use the key search phrases in their posts and they would then turn up when you clicked the appropriate top 50 hyperlink.

example:
omni vs sector >> »/nsearch?q=omn···tor&cat=

Of course the address would be replaced by the "omni vs sector" I just don't know how to do it. Who would have guessed that searching for "putty" would get you the same excellent info?

I'm not sure how this would be implemented, maybe in a sticky or as I recall the site where I saw this it was just link beside the search link to a page where the list was kept.

Tim - That is what I was telling djhurt1 in my post. I like the way you listed out everything, maybe it will make some people feel more comfortable about asking!!! I remember when I first came, I thought I would be trying somebody's nerves too. I am still here, and none the worse for wear. I have spoken at length to many of the people here, on the telephone. I promise this, if you stay around here, you will learn plenty - and have a support system second only to your family.

The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. inova don't be afraid of testing the patience here. At the worst we will simply link you the appropriate thread to allow you to do the reading yourself.

I often explain to my wife that the companies in the top blue section and the right sidebar have paid Google to get there.

Hi Tim:

Very insightful listing.

I appreciate people's patience with my questions...lol. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few that doesn't know the answer...lol.

I love reading other people's questions. They may be questions, I didn't consider before and they help us all.

I see you mentioned dealing with wife and family. I was talking to my nephew yesterday and he remarked that he can have problems with his wife and family as he runs his two eBay / Fedex stores where he advertises items for other people on eBay. Seems a lot of business people get crunched for time with the family.

I'm right there with ya airplane, I know very few answers for this forum.
I try to search for the answers I'm looking for before posting, to not annoy the others here. However, I have been guilty of asking the "how do I start a wisp" type questions in the past
Anyways, it's great to have a forum like this for a new business startup. Imagine all the folks that didn't have resources like this who have started business' in uncharted territory such as this. It's a great valuable resource.

This has been a great fountain of info for me. I do try to "pay back" when I have something that I think is worth posting.

Question: who is guilty of "holding back info" because your competitors also post in this forum? Or is this highjacking the thread and taking it in a totally different direction? Just a thought.
