I keep getting WGA stating my copy of Windows XP pro is not genuine. After calling the guy who built my PC I found out that the copy of XP is a 'Copy of a corperate Copy".
Is there any way to get this resolved without reinstalling XP. I have years of Data on this PC. I just want to Register it and Keep it legal.
I just want to Fix this ASAP, is there a ULR to resolve this?

| You can report them for selling you an illegal copy, that is if you paid any money towards the operating system.
Now that is basically XP Pro Retail without activation, however I'm not sure a repair install will work in this case, so you can buy a copy of XP Pro DSP or Retail, then attempt a repair install, however you still will loose much time restoring your system to what it was.
You shouldn't loose any personal files unless they were encrypted, but you should backup any important information first. Along with some programs, and updates might have to be reinstalled if everything goes well.
Is there a number they give you to call? Basically you can't buy a license for the version you have unless you buy them in bundles of ten or more, so you might want to talk to them first to make sure this should work out, however if you look around you can find some deals online(if your unsure check with us first) so you can buy a legit copy. Just avoid the too good to be true prices as you might find yourself in the same situation you are already in with people illegally selling the software with pirated keys.
This is one of my local computer shops for some price references, hopefully you have someplace in your area which allows you to pick it up, and talk to somebody in person. »www.enuinc.com/ -- My hourly rates: $25 per hour. $35 per hour if you want to watch. $45 per hour if you want to help. $75 per hour if you tried to fix it, and failed. The biggest error is sitting in front of your keyboard. |

if you want to turn them in you can get a "discounted" copy of XP direct from Microsoft. -- The sooner we get behind schedule, the more time we have to catch up. |

| reply to Riiped Off I just worked on someones computer (hardware problem). In the course of this work I discovered that whoever build the computer for them choose to use a warezed copy of XP. They weren't aware of this issue, and I really didn't feel sorry for them. My advice was to purchase a legit copy of XP and start all over. I gave the computer back and never saw it again. Its always a good idea to know who is building a computer for you. It turns out they were actually charged for their so-called copy of XP. |

1 edit | I've seen some funky ones, one guy I helped had a totally hacked version which included many other illegal copies of software titles, and software to bypass other restrictions. I could give the name here, but I don't want to help those who don't know about it already. There was thousands of dollars worth of pirated software on that dvd install disk ranging from cheap utilities to office 2003, and professional adobe software.
In the end I tell them where to get an oem/dsp version, and how to buy all the other software which they find useful, they scoff at how much all this software really costs....
Piracy costs everyone in the end, but if companies didn't charge so damn much some people wouldn't feel the need to pirate. However these people don't really need these things if they can't afford them either.... Which CEO is the richest man in the world, and yet they can't lower prices? -- My hourly rates: $25 per hour. $35 per hour if you want to watch. $45 per hour if you want to help. $75 per hour if you tried to fix it, and failed. | reply to Riiped Off There are programs to change the Xp key. I would call the A** and ask him what key he is using, and if you paid for a copy, get yours. JMO
You will not be able to do a repair install from a Retail copy of XP, I am pretty sure. The only other option you have is to format and start over with a copy you personally purchase from a "Wal-Mart", or the discounted price copy you get for turning him in to Microsoft. |

| reply to helppleaze No, the version you have you are not supposed to have, and cannot buy just one key, its a vlk or volume license key. You will be forced to some kind of install at least.

| reply to Riiped Off How long have these computers been in use with these bogus XP copies if everyone is now worried about "losing data"? It doesn't sound like they are brand new. -- ~~Tears from the moon, fall down like rain, I reach for you, I reach in vain, tears from the moon...~~ |

| There was a security update a while back that was a special Windows Genuine Advantage program that downloaded onto the HD. Once it was downloaded and installed with the regular updates, it ran everytime Windows started up and would tell of an invalid key. |

2 edits | Save all the data that is new since the first system restore point on or before last Patch Tuesday. To be even more precise, look for the restore point that mentions "Software Distribution Service". You have been "Serviced". System restore will undo the annoyance and will allow the computer to work properly. Stay behind a router and you should be fine. Make a suicide machine (or hard drive) for general use. I can boot 6 ways on this PC, not including floppy or cd.
I could use a plug in as well....... |
