Comcast gives speed boost for large Web downloads
Thu Jun 1, 2006 1:18 PM ET
NEW YORK, June 1 (Reuters) - Comcast Corp. (CMCSA.O: Quote, Profile, Research), the leading U.S. cable operator, said on Thursday it will provide subscribers technology to increase the speed of their Internet connections, particularly to help transmit bandwidth-heavy video and music files.

Comcast developed the technology, called PowerBoost, to use existing capacity within its network to a speed of 12 to 16 megabytes per-second on services which generally transmit at 6 to 8 megabytes per second.

It said the service will kick in automatically for its 9 million high-speed Internet subscribers at no extra charge when a customer downloads a large file such as software applications, games, music and video.

The Philadelphia-based company launched the service without fanfare in its New England region markets last month after a trial period. A company spokeswoman said it expects to roll out the service nationally by the end of the year.

Re: [News] PowerBoost

It must be triggered by some kind of threshold level of network activity. Obviously, casual web browsing shouldn't be able to cause this, so I'd set it above 2 megabits or something.

I assume that the actual caps for the modem will reflect the absolute maximum speeds, while the policy that enables this will be some kind of QOS extension at the headend.

It's really intriguing, actually. And it makes sense, similar to Speedstep/other clock gating technologies for CPUs, but for broadband speeds. This could potentially be really neat.

HTTP headers contain file size I think. This probably only applies to downloading files via HTTP, not other protocols like bit torrent, but I don't know for sure.

That would make it pretty pointless, really.

Casual web browsing really only creates a minimal amount of traffic. Rarely, if ever, do I even get near to breaking 3 megabits a second doing casual web browsing. Only when I DL something huge, (linux distro, FTP transfer, STEAM update, game demo, BitTorrent, e.t.c.), do I actually hit the cap. Comcast knows that well enough.

Plus, the news mentioned movies and stuff, which really isn't usually transfered http. (the majority of "movies", if you know what I'm talking about )

so we don't don't know what file sizes or types will trigger this boost? would it be time based? how is this suppose to work?

wonder if it's applies to ftp based (linked) transfers as well..

but as of tonight in Connersville, Indiana I am getting this on speed test

Last Result:

So is this the power boost ?

Bit Bucket
Excerpt from »www.phptr.com/articles/article.a···m=5&rl=1

A token bucket traffic specification consists of two parameters: a token replenishment rate R and a bucket size B. The token rate R specifies the continually sustainable data rate; that is, over a relatively long period of time, the average data rate to be supported for this flow is R. The bucket size B specifies the amount by which the data rate can exceed R for short periods of time. The exact condition is as follows: During any time period T, the amount of data sent cannot exceed RT + B.

Figure 4 illustrates this scheme and explains the use of the term bucket. The bucket represents a counter that indicates the allowable number of octets of IP data that can be sent at any time. The bucket fills with octet tokens at the rate of R (that is, the counter is incremented R times per second), up to the bucket capacity (up to the maximum counter value). IP packets arrive and are queued for processing. An IP packet may be processed if there are sufficient octet tokens to match the IP data size. If so, the packet is processed and the bucket is drained of the corresponding number of tokens. If a packet arrives and insufficient tokens are available, the packet exceeds the limit for this flow.

Figure 4 Token bucket scheme.

Over the long run, the rate of IP data allowed by the token bucket is R. However, if there is an idle or relatively slow period, the bucket capacity builds up, so that at most an additional B octets above the stated rate can be accepted. Thus, B is a measure of the degree of burstiness of the data flow that is allowed.

If a traffic flow exceeds some profile, several approaches can be taken. Individual packets in excess of the profile may be re-marked for lower-quality handling and allowed to pass into the DS domain. A traffic shaper may absorb a burst of packets in a buffer and pace the packets over a longer period of time. A dropper may drop packets if the buffer used for pacing becomes saturated.

The article says this only pertains to downloads at the moment. They will "look at customer demand" and consider to do this for upload.

Everyone wants more upload. They're just stingy about opening the flood gates.

Two words - Offsite Backups.

BT can be throttled from my machine... again, I use BT for DOWNLOADING.

Not all areas are getting speed burst yet. But AFAIK it is a ~6Mbps speed burst added to your normal speeds. If you arent getting close to your 4/384 you need to call into customer support and have them troubleshoot or have a tech come out.

Anyone that is getting on speed tests a very high number is either using cache or it is burst, there is no powerboost for a long time. *by end of year* and speed tests won't show it at all, only large file downloads. it's really stupid everyone is so impressed and focused on speed tests. just use the net normally and forget about stupid speed tests. they don't mean anything anyway. why? because you can get a very high speed test and crummy download speed or a low test and good speeds. I get low speed, but downloads are always maxing my comcast line.

Anybody with high speed test results using vonage?
Also I'd like to see a list of good routers. I think my old trusy Netgear RT314 is UNusable.
