[Modem] Speedstream 5100a and service switch question

Is there any definitive answer as to if this modem as provided by SBC/AT&T will work with Earthlink's VDSL service?

Also, when selecting the number portability option, how many days of phone/DSL downtime are experienced on average during the transition? I saw another recent post here that mentioned 3 days without a phone line but the DSL service gap might have been shorter.

EDIT: On second thought, the post I read was from a user who switched from EL DSL to EL "DSL2", so that's not as applicable to my question.

Yes, your SBC 5100a will work with Earthlink's regular ADSL.

Earthlink does not sell ADSL2 or ADSL2+ as a standalone service yet. To get it requires the bundled LPV service called "EarthLink DSL and Home Phone Service" at the link below (and it comes with an ADSL2+ Modem as part of the bundle - you only pay shipping/handling of ~$20.00):

Your 5100 will work fine for the regular DSL Service, but you don't need it as there is a new ADSL Modem with your DSL service that only costs you $19.95 (Shipping & Handling). Then your 5100 can be a back up unit.

If you use your 5100a DSL Modem, you will need to supply PPPoE either by using a Router that supports PPPoE or by running PPPoE software on your PC. All Earthlink modems since summer 2003 come with PPPoE in the Modem's Firmware.

Note: If you are switching DSL Providers in attempt to fix any line problems that will not work as Earthlink will use the exact same telephone line that SBC uses for regular DSL service under "Line Sharing". Changing providers does not fix line or speed or loss of sync issues.

Thanks but will the 5100a also work with the bundle? That's the one I was actually considering and failed to mention above. I need to minimize downtime as much as possible.

That's never been tested, sorry.
