This "PowerBoost" technology seems absolutely useless to me. Why not just raise speeds instead of initializing bursting? |

JTF, bursting only puts a little more stress on the network temporarily while doing a speed increase causes more stress on the system forever. They need to upgrade the equipment to handle higher sustained speeds for a permanent speed increase. |

An across the board speed increase increases the available bandwidth to everyone. A speedboost type solution really helps the "casual" user more than a power user (or bandwidth hog in Comcast speak). The last thing Comcast wants to do is open up the floodgates for those users who will basically download as much data as their pipe will allow. They've dealt with this by the notorious warnings and shut-offs of those who are the worst offenders, but have received a lot of flack over the "invisible caps" (understandably so). It really doesn't cost them anything to increase speed for those users who would download the same amount of data, regardless of how fast their connection is. If they double their speed, their download is over twice as fast, so their overall load remains the same, and the casual users are happy because they are realizing faster downloads for their type of use. Power users won't realize nearly as much of an increase, because after a short period, they are back to the same speed they used to have. It's a way to look better to the casual user, and throttle the power user, without nearly as much negative publicity as invisible caps.
I really wouldn't be surprised to see this type of setup used more, and maybe even expand over to the upload side. |

| Speeds are definately WAY faster after a reboot of the modem today:
dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-06-06 20:40:31 EST: 31525 / 693 Your download speed : 31525 kbps or 3940.6 KB/sec. That is 492.2% better than an average user on comcast.net
Your upload speed : 693 kbps or 86.6 KB/sec. That is 69.8% better than an average user on comcast.net
Have a nice day... |

| reply to dscline I see what you're saying now. I still however think that an upload speed increase to 768k on the Silver tier would suffice. If someone is abusing the service, than they should just follow traditional policy with a warning and if it isn't adhered to than proper action would be taken within the limits of the TOS agreement.
PowerBoost might solve some problems initially, but I think in the longrun, a speed increase once or twice a year is a better plan until the desired speeds are obtained. |
