| reply to lilhurricane I am tired of Microsoft. All the future machines I have will be this I hope.. So far it is neat. Looks a feels a lot like winders. The program is free even the enterprise and server editions. It said it will always be free. The machine I am running it on is just a cruncher but I will be able to do testing there and also learn about the UNIX system. -- »www.menofart.com |

| reply to spm9999 speaking of a "new" OS.. finally figured out how to get TSC working on this one..
'tis also free, also comes in an x86 version.. although has a bit steeper learning curve then linux (my advice for anyone learning unix, stay away from the GUI as much as possible, learn CLI, then all unix is pretty much the same)..
nice thing about Solaris, it's been around for a long time, and it's multi processor support is second to none, so if you're looking to run.. say a multi dual-core processor cruncher... look no further
(that is if it works.. I only have TSC working on the latest sparc release, need to tackle the ia86 release next - some library issues :-/ ) -- I'm not against half-naked girls... well, not as often as I'd like to be. |

| reply to spm9999 Ubuntu also has an Ubuntu LiveCD which makes it possible to test Ubuntu without changing anything on your computer. (Of course it will be slower than running it from a hard disk, but it's a good way to see what it has to offer and to investigate how well its hardware detection detects the hardware in your computer)
If you want to keep Ubuntu permanently, there is an easy installer right on the LiveCD.
If you don't want to download and burn it yourself, you can even order a few CDs for no cost from shipit.
I've been running it for 7 months now and of all the Linux distributions I've every played with, I think this one is one of the most user friendliest distributions I've ever seen.
It's certainly different than Windows, so keep in mind that you need to learn a few things*; however many sources for help and support can be found on the internet.
* Let's not forget that Windows takes time to learn as well.
I do not recommend directly erasing your Windows installation and trying to switch at once. The LiveCD and dual boot are good options to get to know the system better before making any fairly drastic choices. Another approach is to play with it on an older machine that is just collecting dust somewhere. |

| said by Dersgniw :I'm running one of our TDPH blades on Mandrake Linux... runs great (once I updated some libraries)! looks like we can forget Solaris on intel.. since the DockWin.exe and GridWin.exe binaries are sparc only binaries
guess I'll have to wait until either a) a new TSC version, or b) Sun finally incorporates the sparc/intel binary interoperability that they've been promising since like 2004
(not holding my breath for either)
'tis a shame.. could have made a heck of a cruncher with this... »www.tyan.com/products/html/thund···pro.html
