A guy tries to cancel his AOL account, it isn't that easy.

»tinyurl.com/g5por
I got this off SA

How hard is it to cancel AOL?

I decided to find out.

Here’s the setup.

I had an AOL account years ago. I kept it around because many of the suits in my office use AOL. When the boss needs AOL fixed, you’d better have an account to get it running. That’s fine with me. It made troubleshooting much easier. Even though my father and mother both had accounts under mine, their computer didn’t even have the software installed. No one in my family was using it, and at most I was using it once a month.

Recently, I decided that I could spend $14.95 a month in many better ways, and decided to cancel the AOL account. Knowing the horror stories, I decided to do the deed at work where I could record the whole thing. I knew it was going to be good, but I had no idea it would be the abusive disaster it was.

Click here to check it out.

The highlight for me? Him asking for my father when the account is mine, the name on the account is mine, and the card paying the bill is in my name.

Warning: I know the audio on my end is a bit weak. I don’t have the greatest phone recording setup. Anyone else have an interesting “cancellation” story from AOL or some other company?

I had the same problems a few years ago. Instead of arguing with the Customer Service rep, I went to my bank and had them put a Stop Payment on the AOL account that was assigned to the card.

Oddly enough the service was cancelled soon after and no annoying CS reps to deal with either.

They canceled mine and then billed me later that month. Though other than that, it was certainly not as difficult as yours.

LOL
That AOL phone monkey totally showed how desperate AOL is to keep users.
They have been using these "used car salesman" tactics for years now. AOL can crash and burn and the internet wouldnt skip a beat.

Back when I had AOL, they would always give me "free hours" whenever I tried to cancel it.

sounds like when me and my girlfriend tried to cancel XM radio, we didn't even have the car anymore, and they kept wanting to know why we wanted to cancel :P

Ok, I'm bored. The guy trying to cancel his account had to say, "Cancel the account" sixteen times. Kinda at a loss of words to describe the strongarm tactics of that AOL rep. Despicable begins to describe their demeanor.

Common mistake.

Do not discuss anything with them. I want to cancel it. Will not explain anything.

Let them do their thing and read that paragraph.

MAKE SURE TO GET THE CONFIRMATION NUMBER.

I signed up for AOL Music Now in January - only for credit for a free offer. They trippled billed me. Then they doubled billed me several times. Then I cancelled. They said they did but they didn't. Then they finally actually cancelled the next month. Then they billed me last month and this month.

I already told the credit card to stop accepting charges from them. So far they haven't done that. If I get billed again I'm closing the card. I don't need it. I have many and I have great credit.

I've never been treated like that guy treated you but it doesn't surprise me. That guy needs his ass kicked. He was rude and insulting.

AOL, btw, now won't reply to my emails. I refuse to call anymore. And oh yeah, never tell them anything. Don'tgive them an excuse to argue with you. I'm not interested anymore. Nothing more. Maybe a No thank you, but nothing else.

Btw 2. You never have to actually by a song from AOL Music Now. Just listen to it using WMP. Look at the properties for the song and get the URL then use wget or something to get the song while it is still playing. No $0.99 fee. It's not protected.

I applaud your patience, I would have hung up and called my credit card company....you should call a national news bureau with this, it would make a great 3 minute bite on one of those segments about "bad business"....

I hate to admit this but one of my first jobs was working at an AOL call center. This was about ten years ago. One thing I remember being drilled into my head during training was that if someone insisted on cancelling you cancel the account. It was not required to even be the account holder so long as they could confirm some basic details (name, phone number). AOL had just lost a lawsuit for making cancellations so difficult.

Guess they need to be sued again since they forgot.

What an asshole...After the second time, I would have demanded his supervisor.

I agree with someones suggestion here...You need to send it to some local news media and the State Attorney General.

I had the same exact problem. What a %$#@. He tells YOU that you have to listen to his little sales pitch talk before he can cancel the account what B.S. They need to shut the F up and just cancel accounts that people no longer use or need. I hate AOL with a passion. I actually had a guy that was more of an a$$whole than that guy. I was on the phone like 15 minutes before I gave up and called again and got another idiot to cancel my account there.

I've gone through he same thing. Only the guy told me I didn't use the account enough to know if I wanted it or not. He wanted me to use a few hundred hours and then make my decision.

These guys are tough, and they are trained to be this evasive.

Also, I only signed up to get a free $100 Gift Card, which I got, and then promptly canceled the account!! I still won in the end. Thanks AOL....

Wow! I'm thinking a threat to turn the recorded conversation over to attorney's general of your state and wherever his call center was might have gotten his attention, assuming one-party recording is legal in your state. If it's not, then mid-way through say "I'm going to now begin recording this conversation" (so it's now a two-party recording) and see what they do. That's just freaking nuts! Guess he was hoping to piss you off enough to just hang up.

I can't believe he tried to justify non-cancellation by claiming you were still making "heavy" use of the account. Who cares? If someone asks to cancel their account, cancel the stinking account!

Can't say I've had a call experience THAT bad and I hope I never do.
