Bumpmap Tutorial

First I scaled the image down a bit, Image> Scale Image, then added alpha channel, Layer> Transparency> Add Alpha Channel, carefully selected the background using Select> By Color, while holding the Shift key and erased, Edit> Cut.

Added a new layer, Layer> New Layer.

Selected the Bucket Fill tool, from the toolbox window, click the bucket, or from the image window, Tools> Paint Tools> Bucket Fill and selected Pattern Fill, Wood of some sort and filled in the new layer.

Selected Bump Map, Filters> Map> Bump Map, selected background layer and adjusted settings.

Saved as .jpg, File> Save As, the export dialog will automatically appear, click Export.

I think that should just about cover it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks, since I posted "you on wood again" and was asked for a tutorial, I thought it would be a good idea to show how it was done using the GIMP.

I got a little carried away with the concept of inlaid/carved wood here, but I had fun.

What program did you use for that, caff? It really is nice!

Just Photoshop.

Pretty much just used an array of texture fills into some nice celtic dingbats I have. Then used a LOT of layer style mixtures. Did some hue/saturation/brightness/etc. messing with the layers to get the look I wanted.

Ten separate dingbats, and six different wood textures.

(The middle ornament is two different bits, and the frames are in the format of top-right corner, top-left corner, etc. I probably could've used less and just flipped them around, but they were there, so why not?)

The tricky part was not having it look like the normal PS bevels...tried a number of different contours and messed with the settings to get what hopefully looks more like inlay.

I got the textures from »astronomy.swin.edu.au/~pbourke/texture/ which I was going to add here, but it's already in the Imaging links it appears. Great site.

Nothing as elaborate as what you did, caff; just a simple wood cut. I have the dingbats and all, but I just didn't want to spend much time on this one. Spent more than it was worth, already - started out with a tutorial at PhotoShop Cafe, then didn't like it, and started applying my own stuff.

That's a great site for textures, caff. Thanks so much for the link - it's in my art links now.

Would you mind doing a tutorial on the last one you did, caff, for the archives? It really is deserving of being kept - just great work.

Hey, glad you like it. I was going to post it to the links thread, but I got a warning that it was already in the Imaging Links..weird, eh?

Thanks! I appreciate it.

*bows*

I'd be happy to do one, the problem is I tend to do stuff using the "seat-of-pants" method. Meaning, I couldn't really put together exactly how I did it in a linear fashion because I don't know all the steps.

I'll post the .PSD, which might be horridly confusing..lol
Also, the two celtic fonts I used to make the designs with, as you'd need them for the PSD anyways. I can't recall if textures are embedded in the PSD or not, if there is an error about them missing, they are all from the wood's section of that same link.

There's some things I did that aren't in the layer styles, such as the bevel on the background that was done with Eye Candy 5 Impact's Bevel tool, but I think most of it is.

Probably not until tomorrow, but I can try to put together the basic steps I used though, minus the mondo experimenting parts.
