I Flashed My DI-524 D2 to a DI-624 D2

DI524D2to624···_402.zip 777,275 bytes
(DI524D2to624D2_firmware_402.bin)
DI624D2to524···_400.zip 804,387 bytes
(DI624D2to524D2_firmware_400.bin)
Using paul248's post here »I *THINK* I just flashed my DI-524 into a DI-624! as a guideline, I have successfully upgraded my 524 revision D1 to a 624 revision D2 version 4.02. On the outside, the sticker says it's a D1 but when I opened it up, the board said it's a D2. When the rebates that came with it go through, it will have cost me about $7 in S/H. After reading up on it I found out why the D version is "free" about now with rebates, when it only lasted a few weeks before E came out.

I've been messing around with it for about a week now and it seems to be running fine. However, the only thing I have to test with it with is my Smartphone that has a Wi-Fi card in to surf the internet with. I can connect with WPA Auto2 selected with TKIP and PSK enabled. That it the highest encryption my phone supports. I can't connect with the Super G enabled. A couple of days ago I couldn't connect and went through the trouble of going back to the 524 firmware before I realized my phone had lost the Key somehow. I went back the 624 firmware and connected again just fine.

I used the same method that paul248 used in hacking the flash file. I had to change the end of the 624 file to match the 524 and then ran the checksum.exe found here »/r0/download/8···ksum.zip so I could put the proper checksum on the "new" 624 firmware.

The easiest way to flash is to only have your PC connected to a LAN port and make sure the 524 has been reset to an IP of 192.168.0.1. Then login to it and go to TOOLS>FIRMWARE. Upload the file "DI524D2to624D2_firmware_402.bin" above and let it finish. You may have to reboot the router. If it goes fine, it is now a 624. If not, it will probably be in crash recovery mode which can make things a little difficult.

I have also included the hacked file DI624D2to524D2_firmware_400.bin to flash it back to a 524 if need be. Remember, it's a lot easier to update the firmware from within the admin interface than with the crash recovery screen.

I looked on Dlinks page and there was no mention of a rev D2 for the 624. Did you mean to say rev D1?

Nice! It wasn't until Rev. E that D-Link started using a "crippled" (SuperG/XR disabled) Atheros chipset in the DI-524. So I had the suspicion that the DI-524 Rev. D could also be converted to a DI-624 Rev. D, since they use the same chipset.

Unlike the Rev. C 524/624 though, the DI-524 Rev. D (WL_RT_2454_34A0_T1-1) does not share the same model identification code at the end of the firmware file as the DI-624 Rev. D (AP52-AR2316-RT). Now we know the model identification codes don't necessarily have to be identical for it to work.

I had to hack the 624 firmware so the identification code matched the firmware for the 524 and vice versa. The 524 ident code had to match the 624 when flashing it back.

The latest firmware for the 524 doesn't say it is for the rev D2 either. Rev D2 is printed on my board on the inside even though it says rev D1 on the outside. I don't understand what your getting at or what difference it makes if it is working. It makes sense to me that if I am changing the software on a 524 rev D2 to a 624, it is still a rev D2.

Out of curiosity, was there a reason you didn't use the latest DI-624 revD firmware 4.03?

Calm down dude. Not all of us pry open our routers to read the markings on the interior. I just wanted to make sure i would be loading the correct firmware on the correct router so as not to brick it.

I did try the 4.03 firmware but flashed it back to 4.02. I can't remember exactly, just that it didn't seem to work right.

Ok, I was just curious. Guess people can always upgrade to 4.03 after the conversion.
