Believe it or not I watched the entire clip. Can you believe a dozer couldn't pull up a 4' anchor with 2-3 50lb bags of concrete? With all the slack in the guy wires, enough consistent gusts would suck those up out of the ground from my experience.
Yea, you gotta love the tidyness of that equipment box. I believe the $11/month since a lot of electric coops have $5 minimums which still leaves him 54 kwh of usage, which is still kinda low considering equipment.
POE Cisco 2610 Router Switch Server
I wish'em luck and don't want to bad-mouth anybody in the business that's providing a service no others will provide in the area. There's many a low-budget WISP's out there, and we all have to start somewhere and do the best we can. |

I watched it and couldn't stop laughing -- it makes everything I'm doing look like horrible overkill... and I didn't think I was doing enough!
I love the part about the mail/web server being on a 400 MHz compaq in a box on the tower itself in the middle of the woods. |

I actually know a guy who put a $999 Axentra NetBox in an outdoor enclosure at the base of his TV mast to run everything required for his small village WISP.
The tiny 1Ghz Via mini-ITX handled PPPoE (he used DSL), the AP functions using 200mW Senao, all bandwidth control tasks, DNS caching, user e-mails and even his portal.
He reached ~25 users until his NetBox died. By that time, Axentra had stopped selling hardware and was selling just the NetBox software on CD for $399.
Other than the 400Mhz Compaq stuffed inside outdoor box, and some clean up of the box with Cisco, they have not done anything that deserves such ridicule. Even their dream of 200 users on 2xT1 is not as bad as some WISPs I know who want to do the same with 2 DSL lines.
Nothing can beat this setup mess however. »post a pop pic...or is that pic pop? |
