Usually I let idiotic comments like this go by but it is getting really old. The Bush = Nazi equation is so stupid that you really have to have no brain activity to come up with that analogy.

I'll bet you that by the time the 2006 elections come around, there will be at least one NSA secret room, staffed by illegal aliens, in every single ZIP code in the USA. I'm keeping an eye on Salon to let me know where they are exactly.

Yeah, right now, at the bequest of the Bush administration, and under the authorization of the Patriot Act, millions of people are being gassed in waterless showers, and shoved in crematoriums, some still alive. Right now, Donald Rumsfeld has a lampshade made from human skin, and millions of gypsies, Poles, Solvaks, Jews, Russians, and homosexuals are toiling away in slave camps to make vengeance weapons so Bush can take over the world.

Sorry, you may not like the present administration in power, you may very well hate them. But, the fact that you can freely speak out against them and not end up a jar of ashes floating down the river Rhine is proof enough that comparing it to the Nazi state is nothing but the pointless drivel of an undisputed ass hat.

ASS HAT....

So, are you saying that until it gets to that point, it's all good?

There are many ways to take away from people. One way is to do it like the Nazi state and just do it. The other is to change things slowly and little at a time.

No, Bush isn't a Nazi completely. But, he's becoming more of a dictator and running this country in his and his own friends interests vs the best interest of the people in many ways.

The power to speak out against the government is not an end-all.. The governmnet is pushing religion into governmnet all the time more and more. Further, it's pushing it on other countries as well. When was the last time the administration made a comment about how our countries muslims are helping other muslims in the middle east? now, how many times do you hear about the compassionate christians from the U.S. over there doing good?

This administration is full of itself and the people aren't stupid. It only took 6 years for many to figure it out, but this lame duck is transparent and useless.

I still would compare this administration to the Nazi state becuase they all start somewhere.

Remember, Bush said "the constitution? It's just a piece of paper"....

The people who created this country and the documents they used to seal the deal were all massively religious in nature and execution. Honestly, read a history book!

Every session of Congress opens with a prayer. Christmas is a national holiday. Every president I can remember has called for a national day of prayer. Even the money we use has 'In God We Trust' written on it. Read George Washington's first presidential address. Hell, read damn near anything written by the people who fought the revolutionary war. It's not a problem that religious people are involved in government, it's a problem when people (like you?) think religion and God have no place in public life.

I have to chime in here, because both sides of the argument are flawed. Yes you are correct, Bush is not Hitler.

However.....
Hitler came to and maintained power in Germany using hate and fear. The Germans were in a bad place, and he was kind enough to point out to them who was to blame for it. He then used this fear/hatred as an excuse to change the laws, remove people's freedoms, and to push public opinion toward supporting a war. A war I might add, against people who had nothing to do with the problems at hand. Concentration camps and the genocide against the Jews didn't happen over night, there was a long progression, one step at a time, slowly stripping away rights and adding new laws. It began with setting up a police state, in which all citizens were monitored by the government, just in case they might be doing something wrong.

We do in fact have a leader who has maintained power through fear and hate of those "not American". We do in fact have a leader who has slowly but surely eroded the constitutional rights of the people. We do in fact have a leader who has rewritten laws to grant more power to the executive branch, and in cases those changes have failed, he flat out ignores the laws to begin with. We do in fact have a leader who has setup and sanctioned torture of "enemy combatants", so long as it is done on foreign soil. We do in fact have a leader who has ordered government agencies to ignore laws of the land and our own constitution in the name of "weeding out the enemy". We do in fact have a leader who has signed laws granting police and other law enforcement agencies the right to enter our homes with no notice before or after, without the trouble of getting a warrant. And we do (in credible claim) have the government monitoring every phone conversation we have.

So while I agree Bush is no Hitler, and we are no where near another Holocaust, claiming any comparison between the current state of things and those of early Nazi Germany is stupid....well that just doesn't fly either.

Keep reading that history book, because also in it is a primary reason those who created this country came here...to escape the tyranny of a state-sanctioned religion. They may have been very religious, but they were keenly aware of what it was like to be persecuted for practicing the "wrong" religion.

You're close. It's a problem when religious people in government--and in power--use said power to force their morality on others who disagree. You can be religious all you want--with yourself and your God--but as soon as you attempt to force me to do it with you, you've become one of the tyrants this country was founded to escape from.

I didn't say half as much as you say I did, but that's fine.

Where did I say that religion has no place in public life? If anything, people like me believe that religion is a personal choice and right that everyone has afforded to them. If you choose to practice religion, great, if not, GREAT TOO! See how that works? To me, the only thing that government needs to do is protect the rights of people to practice their religion of choice... not push it, not sponsor it.. nothing.

So, in your words? Relgion and god, in my view, have no place in 'government"...

..and for the record, since you don't know each president personally, you can't say exactly why each president has called for a national day of prayer. Could it be that it's the popular thing to do? Statistics show that many americans are religious to some point. Presidents say many things and may not believe every thing they say.. but, it does sound good too. Some people just need to have their views validated by someone else instead of feeling good about their own personal choices. (Hey, and there we have part of what makes up religion!)

But, I do thank you for the lesson of the history of the obvious. RadioDoc said it best in his post below this one. You should read it.
