Well they don't own their own "plant and equipment" so this would be a big negative for me.

Their ping time is fast 45ms @ 2.5mb DSL from Chicago

So what? You have to own your "plant & equipment" to provide good service?

I have to say I do like the website as well.
Its professional.
Its not cluttered with testimonials and fake pictures.
The picture of a server is a IBM instead of a huge Sun E25k like so many hosts that actually just use cheap low end machines.

So far so good!

Yes! If you don't have your own building with good equipment, fiber and servers that you control connected to tier 1 backbones then you have **no** control over what happens to your customers when problems occur with the plant and equipment.

Planned intelligent control translates into excellent service. Anything else sooner or later goes bye-bye.

I would have to disagree. We have been renting space from Savvis for years. They serve you with a high class staff at hand (that does 24x7 monitoring) along with several redundant power supplies, biometric security, and a direct link to the backbone! I think we have had problems with them once (with the backup failing during a planned maintenance or something like that... but our equipment never went down and our internet kept on chugging). Besides that, its been smooth sailing!

I do, however, (slightly) agree that its ideal to own your own equipment (although this is also debatable). If your "rented" servers went down, you would have to wait for the provider to respond. Now if your provider is quick and fast about responding to such things, then you should still be able to offer quality services. However, if they are slow... then it sucks to be you (esp. when the customers come to honk at your door).

There's pros and cons to everything... I guess it all depends on who, what, and where! (oh ... and don't forget about your wallet too)

luma - thanks for the compliment! Glad you like it.

In response to mqsymth, for most hosts it is simply not feasible to own the entire datacenter, and from the opposite side, any company that may own an entire datacenter is not likely to offer shared/reseller hosting. I think RUdue0884 pretty much covered all the main points, so I won't repeat everything again. Essentially, if you are working with a responsible datacenter, you will have all the most important benefits such as redundancy, security, network connectivity, etc.

And yes, planned intelligent control does translate into excellent service - we have all the control we need arranged with the datacenter and it has worked out beautifully. This is why we have been in business for nearly 3 years now and have very high customer retention .

In looking for hosts I have very specific needs in mind:

1) OS

2) OUTBOUND SMTP support - I don't use ISP servers, I use my domain host servers, (and no its no for SPAM) so I don't have to keep changing servers or deal with unreliable servers or email address changes etc..

So here is some constructive critiscism:

1) Put the OS on the site, Fedora Core V1.23 or Debian, what ever it is. If its Linux I want to see it plastered all over the place. If its something else, post it and I can move on. I am quite biased when it comes to hosting, regarldess of what certain others I have to deal with think and choose. I pick and only consider 100% linux and/or Unix based hosts.

2) This line "And Much More!" on the the page outlining the services needs to be a link to a FULL 100% BREAKDOWN of ANY AND ALL FEATURES of your accounts. And blunty, there is no detail too small. That your using plug 2 row 3, for the AC power I would like to know! OK, so thats a lot of hyperbole, but DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS, SELL, SELL, SELL!
An example is here: »www.site5.com/hosting/ This is not perfect either, but, I want to get my questions answered ON the site with out having to contact sales or support. I may click the next site get my questions answered before you reply. I am not going to stop my search and wait for a reply.

3) Customer Service -

I would love to move one of my domains to your hosting, but right now two things is holding that back: answers to questions on the features and the no response to 2 PM's here. That to me puts into question the line quoted above. I like supporting those here with my business, but so far the salesmanship is lacking. You can't retain what you didn't close the deal on.

Hi rec9140,

We do support SMTP. It is also available on port 26 in the case that your ISP blocks outgoing connections on port 25.

Your account would be setup on a server running RedHat Enterprise Linux 4.

Right now we do not provide a full breakdown of the features on the website as it takes up a lot of space - but you do make a very good point. I will look into seeing if our designer can setup some sort of little popup window or drop down box which extends the feature list for those who need it.

I do apologize for not replying to the PM - it seems that I completely missed the new PM icon (I'm right now looking into seeing if there is an option for email notification). For the fastest response, please email sales [at] unsitesolutions [dot] com .

Thanks a lot for your input!

Cheers,
Thomas
