alchav join:2002-05-17 Palm Desert, CA | reply to Cudni This is a great Poll, I don't think enough people use a File Manager. Most people don't know how to look for anything, they need an icon on their Desktop. This should be Basic Computer Knowledge, along with File Extensions. Files and Directories, Basic Knowledge, and most people just don't want to learn. |

Files and Directories, Basic Knowledge, and most people just don't want to learn. Actually, I kind of did learn something today, or at least something became a little more firmly brought to my consciousness.
I'd not thought much about file managers 'til now and until today I'd have answered "No" if I'd been asked if I used a file manager. But then I saw this poll and it suddenly occurred to me that I use a file manager every time I use a computer: the default file manager that every Microsoft Windows installation has. It just had not occurred to me 'til today that I was using a file manager.
And this despite the fact that I have a degree in Data Processing (though it is a very ancient degree) and that I'm rather more knowledgable about computers than many of my peers. It shows that no matter how much you know (or think you know) there is always more to learn!
I thank Cudni (and lilhurricane) for giving me the opportunity to learn! -- HCN: Because you deserve a rest!

I used Norton Commander for years and when it was discontinued went and checked out several "clones". Salamander suited me the best of all I looked at. It's great. |

Edit. Seems your PowerDesk link in the poll is not working.

 | reply to Cudni I keep coming back to Windows Explorer because of drag'n'drop or contextmenu problems in others I've tried. But I have to go out and get a big bunch of different 3rd party shell extension utilities to make it do what I need it to.
I agree with alchav about this being utterly basic to computing. And I agree with bcool that PowerDesk includes a Find File search module that puts Windows search companion to shame. |
